Long story but a good read

The calf that didn’t give up! This was quite a morning when I discovered a cow in distress trying to give birth. Buzzards were everywhere and all the cows were trying to defend them off. The calf was stuck in the birth canal and was coming out backwards (breach). I grabbed a rope and tied it to the rear legs and started pulling as she was having contractions. The legs and feet were ice cold and I for sure thought I was pulling a dead calf. After about 20 minutes I was able to get the calf out and to my surprise it was alive! I cleared its airways and let mom take over cleaning it up. After about an hour the calf could not get up and started shaking because it was so cold. I went to the barn and grabbed a calf coat and a blanket and wrapped it up. Unfortunately that wasn’t doing much to raise her temperature so with the help of a neighbor we moved to calf up to the working barn to get it out of the wind. At that point I used a hairdryer and it took me 2 hours to get it back to safe body temp. We gave it a little milk replacer with some coffee in it to give it some energy. I ended up having to put the mom in a chute to allow the calf to nurse. This was an 8 hour ordeal and I’m so happy it has a great ending. The calf is 3 days old now and is doing well.

Spring had sprung on the farm!
The Killdeer is nesting in the gravel driveway again.
A mother goose is setting on her eggs.
We have new baby goats.
New baby chicks.
And a new calf that fought hard to come into this world. It’s an amazing story.
