Make sure you are getting the birds you think you are getting.

Can you spot the differences? More importantly, do they matter?

In the middle is an illustration of an idealized Silver Laced Wyandotte hen as described in the breed standard.
On the right, is a hen advertised as a Silver Laced Wyandotte from a popular hatchery.
On the far left is one of my own hens.

The Wyandotte was developed with the intention to be a TRUE dual purpose bird- a good layer, but not as light b***d as excellent layers. A good table bird, but not so heavy that they don't lay well. They needed to hit the sweet spot between the two purposes, while thriving in a cold climate.

Right away, you can see how the body type of the hatchery example falls short of meeting that purpose:
🐓 She's very narrow. Notice the long "crow face" and thin wing feathers. Those features often coincide with narrowness throughout the rest of the body. While likely a good layer, the narrowness on this bird would make it a poor table bird. She may also be more at risk for egg binding.
🐓 Also notice her long back. More exposed surface area is going to lose heat in a very cold climate. A shorter backed bird with more depth is going to be more compact and retain heat better in a colder climate. This hen's long back will not help meet the Wyandotte breed's goal of good production in cold climates.
🐓 The tail angle on this hen is also very high. Tails can be an indicator of pelvis angle. Narrow and tilted pelvises on hens come with a higher risk for egg binding and infections (egg yolk periontinitis).

There are benefits to both types of birds:
⭐Hatchery stock is cheap, often comes sexed, and has basic disease testing. Hatcheries are in the business of producing chicks that resemble a breed, but not producing breeds to their breed standard and intended purposes.
⭐Birds from a breeder are going to be better for homes seeking birds for true dual purposes, keepers wanting a sustainable flock with consistency, and may come with basic to more extensive disease testing. Breeders very often provide mentorship and it's difficult to assign a dollar amount to the incredible value you get from that.

Let the goals for your flock guide your purchase decisions.

Happy flock keeping!
Elizabeth

Attention Poultry Breeders- they are collecting information about breeding programs for chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese. Helps them know what breeds people are working with and identify breeds that might be in serious danger.
If you raise purebred poultry, visit the quick survey so they have accurate representation of what birds are being supported.
