Ever wonder why our corn fields turn so green shortly after harvest?

Planting a winter cover crop after corn harvest helps hold the soil in place through rain, snowmelt, and wind. Its roots capture leftover nutrients, keeping more of them in the field for future crops, while adding organic matter and supporting soil health.

A big thank you to Shawn Gingue for this video, and for planting our cover crops! During a busy harvest, we’re grateful to have someone we trust taking care of this important part of our crop program. 🌽 🌱 🚜

This National Farmers Day, we’re celebrating the whole crew that keeps Newmont Farm going.

From caring for our cows and growing our crops to fixing whatever broke today, every person on our team plays a part. Farming takes hard work, patience, and a sense of humor, especially when the day doesn’t go as planned!

To everyone who shows up in all weather, through early mornings and long days, thank you! We see your effort, appreciate your dedication, and are grateful to have you on our team. This farm wouldn’t be what it is without you!

Corn chopping is a balancing act and the fields don’t all follow the same schedule! 🌽

To decide which field is ready next, we test dry matter: how much of the whole corn plant is left once the water is removed. Too wet, and valuable nutrients can be lost through seepage. Too dry, and it’s harder to pack tightly, leaving air that can lead to spoilage.

Getting it right helps the corn ferment properly and preserves quality feed for our cows.

So if you see us moving from one field to another, there’s a little science behind the shuffle!
