Meet Pickles 🐾

Our barn cat, full-time supervisor, and part-time… questionable employee.

You’ll usually find him posted up on a hay bale keeping an eye on things (or pretending to).

Every farm needs a good barn cat—and we think this one’s pretty hard to beat.

Does anyone else have a barn cat that thinks they run the place? 😂

Introducing Mr. Darcy 🦃

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a young turkey in possession of confidence must be in want of a flock.

At just 3 weeks old, Mr. Darcy has already made his position quite clear..he is, without question, a TOM. With quiet pride and just a touch of attitude, he carries himself as though the yard were his estate and we are merely living in it.

Whether he proves to be agreeable or a bit of a handful remains to be seen… but one thing is certain, he will not go unnoticed ✨

Fermented Feed Friday at Red’s Backyard Farm 🐓🌽

A slower morning with the flock enjoying their fermented corn, something we like to offer a couple times a week to support egg production, improve digestion, and get the most out of every scoop of feed.

Simple routines, happy hens, and a yard that feels just right 🤍

Anyone else enjoying this gorgeous weather today? ☀️

Started with a handful of chicks… and somehow we’re here.

These guys are now 2–3 weeks old and thriving out in the outdoor brooder. Fresh air, more room, and they are growing FAST.

Meanwhile… we’ve got another hatch about to hit.

So naturally we set more eggs:
24 Barred Rocks
21 Wyandottes
3 Easter Eggers

At this point I’m convinced you don’t own chickens…
they just slowly take over your life. 😂

We do still have a few starter chicks available if anyone wants to jump in before it gets out of hand… or join us in it.

How many chickens do you have right now?

☀️ Good morning from the farm☀️

Honey Bunn was extra sweet this morning… sitting here watching everything, soaking it all in like she always does 🐇

She’s one of those that loves her attention — but only when she decides it’s time. And when she does, she’ll come right up like she’s been waiting on you all day 💛

It’s hard not to slow down when you’ve got a little personality like this around.

🐣 Classroom Hatch Day 🐣

We dropped off a batch of our barnyard mix hatching eggs yesterday for the 5th grade class here in Bradleyville ❤️

Every year they hatch chicks in the classroom, and the students even get the chance to take one home — such a cool experience to be part of.

These are the same eggs we hatch here on our farm — lots of color, variety, and fun surprises along the way 👀

We’ll share updates as hatch time gets closer!

If you’ve ever thought about hatching your own chicks or getting started with a flock, feel free to message us 🐥

🐣 44°… and they handled it like champs

We put our new outdoor brooder setup to the test last night—and let’s just say… we were watching it pretty close 👀

Temps dropped into the 40s, but after dialing in the heat, airflow, and bedding, these chicks woke up this morning:
✔️ warm
✔️ fed
✔️ and loud as ever

This is the part of building a farm people don’t always see—figuring things out, making adjustments, and learning as we go.

Safe to say… the setup passed its first real test.

Would you trust your chicks outside at those temps?

Do you ever have so much help that it’s inconvenient and slightly annoying? First time with broad breasted turkeys and I have to say they are worse than our dogs 😂😒🦃 Brian and the gang, not much we can do outside without them at this point 🤣🥴
