We have a hay share with our neighbor Phil, which means the hay fields are ours, while the equipment and labor are his. The finished product gets divided between us, so everyone’s animals have hay for the winter. Most of the time, Phil cuts and bales; he lets Chris have a turn on the hay-rake in between. 7” of rain in less than 4 hours makes for soggy pastures. The cows got moved to higher ground as soon as we could get out to them. Luckily the chicken tractors were on a high(ish) spot of pasture, so the losses there weren’t quite as bad as they could’ve been. We are thankful for rain, but when it comes all at once, it can make things a little tricky. We’ll be off of social media and out with the animals for the rest of today! More tomorrow...

Yesterday afternoon we transitioned from the winter corral onto summer pastures! From now until winter, the herd will get moved to fresh grass every single day. They are and will continue to be 100% grass fed and finished, spending their days converting sunshine and chemical-free pasture grass into clean, healthy protein for our family and yours. . . We only have two beef left for the 2018 season; we’ll be processing in the fall. We’d love to be your farmers! After a slight delay, our brooder is full! 262 Cornish Cross chicks arrived today; with not a single loss. What a difference a few weeks make! . . . #pasturedpoultry #knowyourfarmer #simplifyyourfood #yellowhutchfarm

Yesterday was our first bad day on the farm. We were expecting our first batch of 275 meat birds for the brooder. Somewhere between the hatchery and our local post office, neither of whom is to blame, something went very wrong, and only 20 of the birds made it alive. 20. . We called the hatchery immediately; they were equally shocked and sad. A new batch will ship next week, but we will be nervous until they arrive safe and sound. We care about each and every animal even before they make it to the farm. This sad day, and subsequent delay, combined with a later than expected start (thanks, #snowpocalypse ), puts our first chicken processing day a couple weeks later than we had hoped. . We aren’t sharing this to complain or have a pity party. Things go wrong in farming all the time, at much larger scales than this. But we started and will build this business on the basis of honesty. We want you to get to know us and our farm - good days and bad - so that you can truly know what goes into your food. Chicks get shipped all over the country, every day. This was certainly a fluke, and we trust our (highly recommended) hatchery to get us our first batch as soon as they can. Until then, we’ll keep a close eye on this first bunch of birdies; they had a rough trip here, but their days from here on out will be good ones.
