I'm going to leave our Brainerd evening pickup 10 minutes early because I'm worried about hail at the farm. Thank you so much to everyone who came, it was so much fun! See you next week!

We're all set to start something new!
Starting tomorrow, Tuesday the 26th, ( and every Tuesday this summer) we'll be in the parking lot of the Essentia clinic at 2024 S 6th St in Brainerd from 5-7 pm so you can pick up your veggies on the way home.
I've got 3 kinds of lettuce, asparagus, bok choy and more. If you'd like to order ahead, you can do that through our website shop:
www.bramblingrowsfarm.com/shop

Since this is so new, please let me know if there's any tweaks that would make it work better! My goal is to make it super easy for you to grab the best possible produce.

Well there's a life lesson for me. I was feeling rather smug about last night's freeze warning because I hadn't planted anything vulnerable yet, and then I remembered the asparagus. Despite being a spring crop, asparagus can't handle a whiff of frost. We did some sunset scrambling with frost cloth and I estimate that maybe half the spears still froze. Could be worse, and I did harvest everything I possibly could so I will have a few stubby little spears at Nisswa tomorrow. Nothing to do but wait for them to regrow.
On the bright side, I have really beautiful spring mix, Godsend lettuce leaves big enough for wraps, spinach (season is almost over for that) and a bit of rhubarb. See you tomorrow!

Godsend is back! I'll have everyone's favorite lettuce at the Nisswa market tomorrow. I'll also have a delightful new spring mix- I'm really loving the mixture of colors and textures- and spinach. Asparagus is starting to pop up little heads but it won't be big enough to harvest until next week.

It's that time of year, I've got more projects than hands and I am looking to hire a couple people for the summer!

Some details:
Schedule is somewhat flexible, I need help between 2-5 days a week. No weekends.
Pay is $17/ hour, plus produce for your household and as much fruit as you want to pick.
If you're interested in learning about growing produce or regenerative agriculture, I'm happy to share everything I know. It's important for me to be generous as others have been generous with me.

If you're interested, you can call me (Rachel) at 218-232-4238 or email [email protected].

Thank you friends, could you please share this post? You all helped me find wonderful candidates last year!

We had a chilly morning harvesting spinach (can you get frostbitten hands in May??) but it was gratifying to have something to take to the Nisswa market tomorrow. As a bonus, Travis made me the BEST scrambled eggs I've ever had with some of the bounty.
It's been a cold and slow spring so spinach is all I have so far. If you'd like to pick some up, we'll be at the first Nisswa market tomorrow morning from 8-12:30. I'm hoping we'll start to see lettuce and asparagus next week but I'll keep you posted.

The greenhouses are getting greener!

Every year I keep expanding what I grow- especially the really popular things- to try to bring you more and more tasty veggies. So far I have NINE HUNDRED feet of sugar snap peas planted (a very daunting amount!) and I'm halfway through a huge carrot planting project (more on that soon!). I'm planning more greens, more broccoli, and, well, more of everything.

So many of you have told me over the years that you'd love to have more access to fresh produce but it's too difficult to get to farmer's markets that are held during working hours. I have an idea for a solution this year, and I'd love to hear what you think!

We've got a parking lot in Brainerd lined up for pickups, and I have the ability to take orders through my website. I'm thinking each week I can post what I have available, you can order exactly what you'd like, and I will have it ready for you to pick up on your way home from work. With our current harvest schedule I was thinking of doing pickups on Tuesday nights from 5-7, but let me know what you think of the time slot. Is there anything else I can do to make it more convenient?
As always, I'm super excited to grow the most delicious food I can for you this summer!

March is one of my favorite months on the farm. I love the wild weather, pruning grapevines, and welcoming the birds back like old friends.

With everything still bare it's easy to see the results of our raspberry grass mulch experiment- absolutely huge growth in the rows that got mulched last summer. (Not pictured- how many times I cracked up trying to make a frowny face!) In a year where fertilizer will be tricky I'm glad we have a viable homegrown solution!

With the warm weather I've been thrilled to see our bees again. Despite the cold they had a downright miraculous winter- 7 of our 8 hives survived and they're already happily collecting pollen from the p***y willows.

We also had a unicorn weather day with no wind and Travis and I were able to pretty easily recover the damaged greenhouse with his expert "tennis ball, wood block, paracord" system.
Seeds are sprouting! We'll see you at market in no time.

This was a new way to lose a greenhouse!
For our non-local friends, we got down to a -48 degree wind chill last night and during the evening I heard a loud boom. When I checked I found that the plastic sheeting on the outside of this greenhouse had totally shredded itself. Luckily I was planning to replace the roof on this one anyway and I already have a replacement piece on hand but we'll have to wait for much better weather to put it on.

Here we are my friends, the last market week of the season. We will definitely miss seeing you!

I will have a bit of squash to share with you this week. I tried growing it alongside dry beans for more soil microbe diversity and I am very pleased with the flavor. The delicata is delicious, and the acorns will get even sweeter if you forget about them in your pantry for a month. 😉

I still have sweet and hot peppers, a few tomatoes, watermelon radishes, basil, and truly stunning turmeric. This time of year as the weather changes all I crave are hot cups of spicy chai, and this weekend I finally got the time to use the turmeric to develop a recipe that I consider perfect. It turns out that shiso (that weird herb I've been bringing to market all summer!) is traditionally a remedy for inflammation and allergies and is a really tasty addition to a pot of chai. By the time fall comes around I am very sore and creaky, and it's nice to have a home remedy that also makes the house smell delightful. I'll be bringing some "chai kits" of turmeric, ginger and shiso to market this week along with the recipe if you'd like to give it a try.

Merry Frostmas to all the farmers out there!

My spirit wasn't ready to let go of all our crop fields but my body definitely is! I've been hustling the last couple days to get everything I can harvested. This week is last call for most tomatoes, salad turnips, and ginger. I will have peppers from the greenhouse a while longer but the nicest ones came from the field and this is a good time to pick them up.
We're tentatively planning to attend farmer's markets next week too. I have some gorgeous parsnips that just need some cold to sweeten up, and we harvested winter squash this week that I'm currently curing in the greenhouse. If they both cooperate, we'll have them next week along with watermelon radishes, turmeric and the greenhouse peppers.
This Friday will be the last fermenting class as I need to start putting some serious work into clearing fields, planting cover crops, and planting garlic. Come join us if you can, the classes have been really delightful and you can store away one last snapshot of this year's delicious produce in your fridge for winter. Link to sign up is here:
