🐔 How often should you actually clean your chicken coop?

If you use deep litter, the answer is probably less often than you think.

Instead of constantly stripping the coop down to bare floors, you keep adding fresh, dry bedding on top of the existing material.

🌾 The lower layers begin to break down over time, while the fresh bedding helps control moisture, odor, and mess.

But there’s one thing that matters...

🚨 The coop has to stay DRY.

If you notice wet bedding, remove it right away. If the surface starts getting dirty, add another fresh layer.

✅ Keep it dry
✅ Keep it well ventilated
✅ Remove wet spots
✅ Add bedding as needed

A full cleanout may only be needed once or twice a year, depending on your setup and flock size.

The goal isn’t to keep the coop spotless...

It’s to keep it dry, healthy, and free of strong ammonia smells. 💨

Deep litter done correctly can mean less cleaning, less waste, and an easier coop to maintain.

🐔 How high should your roost bars actually be?

For most chickens, 24–36 inches off the floor is a great starting point.

📏 Heavy breeds usually do better a little lower to reduce stress on their feet and legs, while lighter breeds can usually handle a bit more height.

But one rule matters most...

⬆️ Your roost bars should be higher than your nesting boxes.

Why?

Because chickens naturally want to sleep at the highest point they can reach.

If your nesting boxes are higher than the roosts, your chickens may start sleeping in them instead. 😬

And that usually means:

💩 Dirty nesting boxes
🥚 Dirty eggs
🧹 More cleaning for you

🌳 A fallen tree crushed nearly half of this chicken run and left the owners with a damaged setup and an uncertain future for their flock.

Instead of letting them give up their chickens, we did everything we could to help. 🐔❤️

We cleaned up the damage, moved the coop to the remaining section of the run, and rebuilt the setup so their chickens could be safe again.

✅ Damage removed
✅ Coop relocated
✅ Run made secure
✅ Flock back up and running

This project was about more than repairing a coop.

It was about helping a family keep the chickens they love—and seeing everything come back together made this one of the most rewarding projects we’ve worked on.

🐔 The First Thing I Tell Every New Chicken Owner

One of the biggest mistakes new chicken owners make is letting their flock out into the run the moment they arrive.

Instead, I recommend a simple 48-hour rule.

For the first two days, keep your chickens inside the coop with:
✅ Fresh food
✅ Fresh water
✅ Plenty of ventilation

Why?

Because you're teaching them that the coop is home.

Once they've settled in, move the food and water out into the run—and leave it there. The run becomes the place to eat, scratch, and explore, while the coop remains the place to roost and lay eggs.

This simple routine helps establish good habits from the start and can dramatically reduce the amount of time it takes for your chickens to return to the coop on their own each evening.

A well-trained flock is easier to manage, safer from predators at night, and less stressful for both you and your birds.
