Preparing our hearts and homes for Passover

Decorating our door is just a kinetic activity we do to remind us of where Passover started and how that blood then became the blood of Jesus for our salvation.

As we remove the leaven from our homes, we are reminded of more than just a physical act—it’s a spiritual one. Just as leaven spreads quietly through dough, sin can quietly take root in our hearts. This season is an invitation to search within, to cleanse, and to surrender.

“Search me, O God, and know my heart”
Psalm 139:23

We sweep, we clean, we prepare, but most importantly, we make room. Room for truth, for holiness, for the presence of God to dwell more fully in us.

May this time of preparation be gentle and intentional, reminding us of freedom, redemption, and the faithfulness of the Lord.

Let every corner we clean point us back to Him.

but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you.

Deuteronomy 5:14

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
John 10:11

I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds.

The word Sabbath comes from the Hebrew word Shabbat, which means “to stop” or “cease.” It also means resting, enjoying, and worshiping. The first time we see this word is in Genesis 2:1–3, when God finishes creating the world and rests from His work. In other words, God Himself practiced Sabbath.

God didn’t stop because He was tired or worn out from creating everything. Instead, His stopping was part of creation itself. By resting, He established a pattern of work and rest that is built into both creation and into us.

When we ignore Sabbath and keep pushing without rest, we end up going against that pattern God designed. The results often show up as burnout, stress, poor health, mental exhaustion, strained relationships, and feeling distant from God. On the other hand, when we practice Sabbath, we experience the benefits God intended. (peace, restoration, health, and joy)

Sabbath isn’t just a nice idea to admire, it’s something we actually practice. And like other spiritual practices, it’s a tool that points to something bigger. The goal isn’t simply to say we keep Sabbath or even just to feel rested. The real purpose is to draw closer to God, to center our lives around Him, and to live more fully in His presence throughout the entire week.

A life of constant exhaustion isn’t the only option. No matter where you are in life, you can begin practicing Sabbath. It’s not something you have to buy or earn, it simply starts with choosing to stop.

So what would it look like for you to set aside some time this week to pause and rest?

“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
2 Corinthians 4:18 NIV

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1 ESV

There are plenty of things we can see: trees, stars, mountains, oceans, people, penguins, our best friend’s smile, elephants, skyscrapers, coffee beans, sunsets, and tulips, to name a few.

God created all those things. He made the natural world, as well as the laws that govern it.

But there are also things we cannot see: behind the breath of the wind, beyond the depths of the universe, beneath the foundations of love. Through Christ, all things were created—in heaven and on earth, both visible and invisible (Colossians 1:16).

And while our mortal eyes might not be able to see the wind or infrared light or the Spirit of God, we still experience their effects. Because there’s more than what meets the eye. There’s more beyond this life.

Paul’s friends, the Corinthians, were experiencing great hardship. They were being hunted and persecuted because of what they believed about Jesus—that He was the long-awaited Messiah. Some were even facing death. But Paul encouraged them to endure such fleeting trials with a hope that’s beyond this world. He wrote:

Human eyes can only see so much. Human minds can only grasp so much. But we can trust God with all that we cannot see or comprehend.

God is real. We might not be able to see Him today, with our physical eyes, but we can experience the effects of His life. Jesus sacrificed Himself so that you might live, and an abundant life awaits you—both on earth and in heaven. There is more beyond the here and now.

So, will you fix your eyes on what’s seen or unseen? Will you trust your five senses, or have the sense to trust in Him?

The moon is shining and the day is done. A quiet reminder that the One who created the night also watches over us through it.

“The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” Psalm 121:8

Goodnight and sleep in peace tonight.

And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. Deuteronomy 6:6-7

Train up a child in the way he should go;
even when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6

The rhythm of work and rest is woven into the fabric of creation. From the very beginning, the Sabbath was set apart as a sacred pause—a gift, not a burden. In Genesis, we see that after six days of creation, God rested on the seventh day, blessing it and making it holy. This divine pattern reminds us that rest is not weakness; it is worship.

The Sabbath is also rooted in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:8–11), where God calls His people to “remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.” It’s an invitation to step away from striving and remember who truly sustains us. In a world that glorifies busyness, Sabbath rest declares trust—trust that God is in control even when we stop.

Jesus deepened this understanding in Mark 2:27 when He said, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” Rest is meant to restore, not restrict. It’s a day to breathe deeply, reconnect with God, cherish family, and delight in what truly matters.

Sabbath rest is more than a day off. It is a sacred rhythm of renewal—body, mind, and spirit. It teaches us to cease from endless productivity and instead find our identity not in what we do, but in whose we are.

May we embrace Sabbath as a weekly reminder that grace, not grind, sustains our lives.

To the families who homeschool 💕

You are the early mornings and the late nights.
You are lesson plans at the kitchen table and laundry folded in between math problems.
You are phonics and fractions, science experiments and scripture memory.
You are the mover and shaker for clubs, sports, co-ops, and other extracurricular activities.
You are patience when it runs thin, grace when the day feels long, and strength when no one else sees the weight you carry.

You don’t just teach reading and writing.
You teach courage.
You teach kindness.
You teach how to fail and try again.
You teach curiosity, resilience, and faith.

You are field trips and library runs.
You are scraped knees and spelling tests.
You are the safe place, the cheerleader, the principal, the lunch lady, and the janitor — all in one.

Some days feel amazing.
Some days feel messy.
Most days are a mix of both.

But every single day, you are planting seeds that will grow for a lifetime and trickle down in your family for generations to come.

To the homeschooling family who wonders if they are doing enough…
You are.
Your love shows up in every worksheet, every read-aloud, every whispered prayer over your children.

What you are building may not always be seen by the world,
but it is seen in the hearts you are shaping.

And that matters more than anything. 💕

When you stand at the edge of the ocean, watching the waves roll in one after another, it’s hard not to feel small. The shoreline stretches endlessly, grains of sand beyond counting, the sun rising faithfully over the horizon.

And yet Scripture reminds us:
He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by name.” Psalm 147:4

If God numbers the stars, surely He knows every grain of sand beneath your feet.

If He sets the boundary for the sea so the waves go no farther (Jeremiah 5:22), He also sets loving boundaries around your life.

The same God who paints the sunrise with fire and gold, commands the roaring waves to be still, and knows the measure of every shoreline knows you. Sees you. Loves you.

Today, let the ocean remind you:
His power is endless.
His faithfulness is steady.
His light will rise again. 🌅 💕🌊
