Today, Andrew Dill of Liquid Intrusion Brewing Company () and Julie Verratti of Denizens Brewing Company
() showed up in Annapolis to testify in support of HB 1243, a bill that would exempt small manufacturers in Prince George's County from personal property taxes. That means equipment, inventory, and the tools we use every day to build our businesses would no longer be taxed at the municipal level.
For Denizens Brewing Company, a woman owned brick and mortar brewery and a staple in Riverdale, this tax burden is real and it is happening right now. Thousands of dollars every year that could go back into their people, their product, and their growth.
For Liquid Intrusion Brewing Company, Prince George's County's first Black owned brewery, a brick and mortar location has yet to be established. The brewery has been actively searching for a permanent home in the county for over three years. Without the passage of HB 1243, opening that location could become financially unviable before they ever get started.
We also want to recognize Mark Burke of Streetcar 82 (,) one of only two deaf owned and operated breweries in the country, for standing with us and submitting a witness statement in support of this bill.
We're not asking for a handout. We're asking for a fair shot.
Vote yes on HB 1243.
To our elected officials representing Prince George's County, we are counting on you to show up for us the way we showed up today.
