It is sale day!

The boys were officially judged in their final show yesterday morning. We appreciate everyone that was in the arena supporting the girls and all the other exhibitors!

The black steer, Hank (1165 #) won his class, but wasn’t in the top three of the final drive. He also won 2nd for weight gain at 3.21 #/day and was 5th overall in homegrown.

The brindle steer, Bo (1310 #) was third in his class and agree with placement. He needs the extra 30 days on feed to get him finished. He’s going to be a heavy boy… He won the weight gain contest with 4.21 #/day.

If you would like to support the girls with their project, please contact Vera Brecken Marquis or David W. Marquis. The girls have spent countless hours with their animals and have been instrumental in the development of the end product… can’t wait to see the marbling in the ribeye, too!

In two days the girls will take these boys to the Suwannee River for their final show before processing. This has been a great project for the girls. From the selection of the animals at the family farm, to weaning them from their mother, castration, feeding, training to walk on a lead, monitoring health, feeding, implanting growth hormone, washing and drying, and showing at various shows.

Emelia's steer needs a few more weeks of feed to properly finish out, and we are happy that we scheduled their date for April 17th! His rib roast will be perfect to smoke, or possibly cut down into steaks... we are sure the rest of his cuts will be just as good!

Maggie's steer is ready to go to the processor now! He's wide, fat in all the right places, and will make a nice amount of ground beef... and hope to enjoy my favorite cut from him in a few weeks, a tri-tip.

If you find yourself is a position to help support the girls in their market fat steer project, please let us know. The funds raised with this project will be used for their upcoming projects, where they have both selected their prospect bull calf (Donald and Gene) and have their sights on many other projects related to their heifers.

I have included my Venmo and Cash App information, and if you wish to support in other ways, please reach out and we will discuss with you individually.

Thank you!

Wow, what a week! After returning from the Florida State Fair and the IBBA (brangus) show, Emelia and Maggie had to get their steers ready for the Florida State Fair Youth Steer Futurity show (with the Bell Agriscience Academy & FFA steer exhibitors) and poultry judging (with the Gilchrist County 4-H Poultry Judging teams). Leaving this past Monday and returning late yesterday, the girls spent the day catching up on laundry and other needs around the house and farm.

This is such a great week watching the exhibitors with their animals they purchased six short months ago… they worked on their recorded education presentation, training requirements, poster, and record book.

Emelia and Elliot bonded very well during this time. He was such a good animal for her, testing her patience with feed management after we battled bloat for the last several months. Her feeding routine led him to finish with the 12th overall carcass.

Maggie and Mr. We**ie were such a good pair from the beginning. Having talked to the producer of the animal at the time their animals were selected confirmed he would be a great fit for her. Having been worked for weeks prior to selection, his size was not a deterrent, and he was generally a peach in the show ring. Her feeding routine let him to finish with the 5th overall carcass.

While neither won one of the major animal focused awards, Maggie was selected as the Intermediate Champion Youth where the youth exhibitors will be selected in each division for each youth show, based on the highest number of points accumulated (points are awarded based on several different topics, from entry, calf sale, letters, training, poster, record book, skillathon, herdsman (keeping their stalls clean), showmanship, and presentation video) and will attend the Champion of Champions dinner and awards ceremony Monday evening.

Poultry judging competition was another huge success, where the Gilchrist County Senior team was 3rd overall (Emelia was on this team) and the Gilchrist County Junior team was 5th overall (Maggie was on this team and she was 2nd Place overall for Junior/Intermediate).

These girls continue to impress us, along with many others, and we are very excited for their future!

Emelia and Maggie had a great first week at the Florida State Fairgrounds with their red brangus heifers for beef week, livestock judging, and wrangling the girls and a total of 9 animals between our group.

Now we are making the final updates to the record books and educational posters for the Florida State Fair Youth Steer Futurity show with Elliot and Mr. We**ie. This is an exciting week for all exhibitors showing their animals from Bell, and throughout the state.

As you may have heard, Emelia and Maggie are each showing a fat steer at the local livestock fair. During this fair, we have the right to purchase the animal back, and process. To ensure there is adequate interest in the sale/purchase of their animal, they are seeking deposits for securing the desired portion of meat.

Reservation of 1/4 will require a $250 deposit; final price will be $1.25/lbs of final live weight, minus the $250 deposit.

An example is 1,200lbs final live weight x $1.25 = $1,500 - $250 deposit, for a final payment of $1,250. This will include all processor charges and we will deliver directly to you.

Reservation of 1/2 will require a $500 deposit; final price will be $2.50/lbs of final live weight, minus the deposit.

Reservation of whole steer will require a $1,000 deposit; final price will be $5.00/lbs of final live weight, minus the deposit.

The animal will be processed within 45 days of March 19, 2025, and should be ready for pickup approximately 14 days after processing.

Their approach for this is simple, confirm your interest in 1/2, or more, and you get to select how you would like to have the animal processed. If you choose a 1/4, we will have processed the typical method we use. We like steak, and hamburger, so expect that. The processor (USDA Inspected) vacuum seals and flash freezes all items, after a 14 days aging process.

Final purchase could be made through the Suwannee River Fair during the sale on March 19, 2025, or independently to each girl.

Maggie's steer, Hank, should be approximately 1,200lbs at the time of processing. This will result in approximately 720lbs hanging weight (prepared for processing), with approximately 400lbs of meat.

Emelia's steer, Bo, should be approximately 1,200lbs at the time of processing. This will result in approximately 720lbs hanging weight (prepared for processing), with approximately 400lbs of meat.

Weights at this time are conservative and anticipate final weights greater than originally estimated.

The girls had a wonderful experience at the Greater Jacksonville Agricultural Fair this past week. While they did not bring home any major hardware, they earned valuable experience and met some of the top players in the industry of the International Brangus Breeders Association.

Now we are preparing for our next show on December 14th, at the Dixie Cattle Invitational and several other shows (Florida State Fairgrounds and the Suwannee River Fair) in the upcoming months.

The girls are back at it, at the Dixie Cattle Invitational, showing their animals, in Lake City, Florida.

Emelia and Maggie each have their two steers and one heifer. Hopefully they each come home with some fresh hardware or possibly some cash. Pretty sure Joy brought her entire herd.

It‘s official, the boys have been tagged for the Suwannee River Youth Livestock Show & Sale!

For those that have shown interest in purchasing a 1/4 or 1/2 of these animals, we appreciate the support! Emelia and Maggie have enjoyed this project so far and continue to impress us with their work effort in the management and care of their animals.

This year, the girls have decided to use a naming theme from the movie Open Season for their Florida State Fair Youth Steer Futurity projects.

Emelia's steer, Elliot, was let out into the alley and vacant pens to stretch his legs a bit. He's very food motivated and will come up and investigate the happenings, and hoping to get a range cube, or two.

Maggie's steer, Mr. We**ie, had an opportunity to get out and enjoy the sun yesterday afternoon. Pretty sure he wishes he could do this more often. He is such an easy animal and very happy that Maggie chose him for her project.

With each doing two market steers this year, we have been very busy. Should be lots of fun for all!

This year Emelia and Maggie are each showing a fat steer at the local livestock fair. During this fair, we have the right of refusal to purchase the animal back, and process. To ensure there is adequate interest in the sale/purchase of their animal, they are seeking deposits for securing the desired portion of meat. At a recent jackpot show, they placed 1st and 2nd in their class.

Reservation of 1/4 will require a $250 deposit; final price will be $1.25/lbs. of final live weight, minus the deposit.

Reservation of 1/2 will require a $500 deposit; final price will be $2.50/lbs. of final live weight, minus the deposit.

Reservation of whole steer will require a $1,000 deposit; final price will be $5.00/lbs. of final live weight, minus the deposit.

The animal will be processed within 45 days of March 19, 2025, and should be ready for pickup approximately 14 days after processing.

The last few days have been exciting for the girls. Both girls assisted with the castration station for their steers that will be shown at the March 2025 Suwannee River Fair. More to follow on the opportunity to get some quality beef (April or May 2025), while also supporting the girls in their market animal projects.

In addition to the castration station, they have assisted with tagging, worming, and other necessary tasks.

This coming week they will be starting the process to get the dairy heifer ready for artificial insemination. Depending on the protocol, this process varies; we will be using a three-step process with the juice (semen) being placed on July 20, 2024.
