Pigs need mud to cool off in the heat!! I try to make sure their mud pit is nice and wet, but the heat was clearly starting to dry it out.... they were sure happy to get some fresh water in there!

We have several new followers, so I felt it was time for a proper introduction. We, Ryan and Tiffany and our 5 kiddos, are the heart behind Hobby on a Hill. We started our hobby farm, because we wanted to produce more of our own food instead of buying from the grocery store. The goal was to get away from so many processed foods, and know exactly where our food was coming from. While we are definitely not where we want to be, we've learned a lot along the way!

While Ryan grew up around many homestead animals, I did not! It's definitely been a large learning curve for me, but I've loved being able to teach our children the importance of growing their own food, and how to be more self sufficient.

On our farm, we garden (which looks a little rough by this time of year), and process our own harvest. We also have several fruit trees around the property that are slowly maturing. As far as animals go, I tend to lose count, but we have chickens, turkeys, ducks, and pigs. We do have 1 cow and 1 goat. We hope to get more in the future, but as many of you know, adequate fencing takes time. 🥴 We also have a horse, that was grandfathered in, and what kind of home would it be without a few dogs and cats.

I'm definitely not good at posting on social media. I hate dragging my phone along with me everywhere, even though my kids would gladly state otherwise. 😂

Whether you're an experienced homesteader, just dreaming about starting one, or simply love seeing cute farm animals, we're glad you're here.

We'd love to get to know you! Tell us in the comments:
🌱 Do you have a hobby farm, a backyard garden, or are you just here for the animals?

For anyone wanting an update on the baby ducks, they’re getting bigger! We lost a few, which I expected since they’re all free range. But they’re still so cute! Momma is starting to wander a little farther away from them, but she doesn’t get too far.

I walked out the other morning to check on the pigs, and the goat was just hanging out on one of the females. Sphen (the goat) is supposed to be with the cow, but the cow bullies him back so he’d rather hang out with the pigs! 😂

Why do ducks have tail feathers?

To cover their butt-quacks! 😂
We'll give you a minute to recover from that one.
Now it's your turn! Share your best farm, duck, chicken, or homesteading joke in the comments. Bonus points if it's so bad it makes everyone groan! 🤣
Let's see who can crack us up the most!

One of the kids came in today and said there were baby ducks outside. I haven't gotten any duck eggs for a while now, and I think we know why now!

🐥 Meet Penguin! 🐥
Our little man has wants to introduce his favorite chick, and his name is Penguin! ❤️
Since picking this chick, he's taken on the responsibility of caring for, feeding, and making sure this chick is loved.

One of the best things about homesteading is watching kids develop a love and appreciation for animals, responsibility, and the simple joys of farm life. Moments like these remind us that it's not just about raising chickens—it's about raising the next generation, too.

Did you have a favorite farm animal growing up? What was its name?

🌾 Happy Father's Day from Hobby on a Hill! 🌾

Today we celebrate the dads who teach us the value of hard work, patience, and perseverance. The fathers who show us how to plant the seeds, mend the fences, care for the animals, and build something worth passing down.

A homestead is more than land and livestock—it's a legacy. It's early mornings, dirty hands, life lessons, and memories made side by side.

To all the dads, grandpas, stepdads, and father figures who lead by example and work tirelessly for their families: thank you. ❤️

👇 We'd love to hear from you!
