Yes, obviously I haven't been around in a while. Life can hand you some super sour lemons every now and then. Plus, Facebook is a real pain in the social media world. Like I said before, you just have to walk away for a while.
When I got chickens five years ago or so, there were very few in my area; today you see them roaming yards every few miles (I live in the country). You can't sell eggs, no one wants the roosters you hatched, you can't sell chicks because everyone wants pullets, so they go to the big box stores to purchase them.
I love my chickens, but to continue to feed as many as I have, spending $107 a month on feed, is becoming not worth it anymore. I threw away 14 dozen eggs in November because they ran out of refrigerator life. I gave something like 4 or 6 dozen to a neighbor that same month. And November wasn't the first time I had to throw eggs away. It's happened a lot over the last two years as more and more people got chickens.
Wondering why I even still have chickens 🤷♀️. It's a chore cleaning coops, making sure they have fresh clean water, food containers have food, trying to keep them as healthy as possible, cool in the heat of summer and warm in the cold dead of winter. Doing your damnedest to protect them from coyotes and other dangers. Why even anymore!
It really isn't about all of the above; it's about keeping my mental state in check, it's about providing for God's creatures, it's about learning the life of trying to become self-efficient, providing my family with eggs, and helping a neighbor when you can.
Life has thrown us some really hard fastballs in the last four years. I was diagnosed with leukemia, and just on January 8th, 2026, we found out my husband has colon cancer that has spread to a few local lymph nodes. Big surgery is on March 11th.
But I keep going and talking to my little friends, aka chickens, providing for them as they in return provide me some peace in knowing I am here and able when others aren't. God bless each of you on this Thursday afternoon and all of your days to come.
