WHY ETRUSCAN?
(2)

The Etruscans, of what is now Tuscany in western Italy, were a mysterious & fascinating people. Their artwork was superbly naturalistic, because they loved life. They also loved food, & wine, so much that they buried their dead in tomb chambers painted with scenes of banquets, dancers & musicians, birds & beasts & olive trees. Unlike most peoples of that era, the Etruscans held women in high estee

m; Etruscan women were often wealthy business owners in their own right. A few years ago Alison had her DNA analyzed & discovered that she's almost 10% Etruscan [aka Toscano Italian]

WHY SMUG? Etruscan ships plied the Mediterranean buying & selling & trading, in direct competition with the Greeks, whose empire was in decline. The Etruscans, like the Greeks, were clever traders... maybe a little more clever sometimes than the Greeks, who called them "smug & oily." Okay, we love our extra virgin olive oil, the cloudier & greener the better. The Greeks also disliked the powerful status of Etruscan women.

Dear neighbors, in case you saw the sign on our door this evening (or in case you see it Sunday morning before Ian gets downtown & removes it) about closing early to go to Urgent Care, please do not be alarmed.

Alison banged her knee, it swelled up a lot, & because she'd had a traumatic injury to the same knee many years ago, we thought we'd better get up to Urgent Care for an x-ray. Turns out it's nothing a bit of sports-injury RICE won't cure. [Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation]

Open as usual at noon on Sunday, till 6pm

Good morning, neighbors. Downtown is quiet today, all the trash is being collected, there's plenty of parking, & we are open.

Fans of Ronnie's Chicago-style giardiniera will be pleased to see that the Roventa (the REALLY hot stuff 🌢🌢🌢) now comes in more realistic sized jars, 8.5 Oz & 15 oz.

And we may have mentioned, gluten-free baklava is back in stock.

Update to the Juneteenth street closure:: Doc Luv the Kids, the organizer, has graciously left a gap in the food booths on our block so as to include our neighbors El Balcon360 in the celebration. We are grateful.

Hi, neighbors. This is the best version we could obtain of the Juneteenth vendor map for Friday. We'll hope it's not correct in placing the beer garden inside our store ...

As you can see, the organizers plan to arrange a line of visiting food businesses directly in front of our neighbor El Balcon. Folks, this not right! Balcon is a small local ready-to-eat food business owned by POC, just like the visiting food businesses. When we called on the organizers to do better, in an earlier post, we got pushback calling us racist. Not true.

First: our business is completely supportive of Juneteenth - in fact, we bought a half-page program ad, though we can barely afford it. We donate to every NAACP fundraiser. We absolutely support Black freedom, Black culture, & Black lives.

We also support our neighbor business, El Balcon, which is getting screwed over for the second month in a row by a special event taking over this block without consideration for the people already here.

We do not believe that it is racist to call out actions by POC that actively cause harm to other POC.

Finally, to call an event a block party implies that the people ON the block are invited, informed, respected - not disrespected and excluded.

What we are seeing here is an event focused on solidarity that at the same time is choosing, unnecessarily, to hurt a small local POC-owned business. With a different arrangement of booths, the Juneteenth organizers can INCLUDE El Balcon instead of excluding them from the celebration, and that's what we call on them to do.

We love Yola's food, we love the restaurant... and now we can have wine with dinner too. Shelton is really not that far from Bremerton, folks, and dinner at Yola's is worth the drive.

Lebanese wine is excellent, by the way. We've carried it here. I don't believe there's any in stock at the moment, but it will happen.

Yes! You can get the special frozen now… come on by.
We also have beer today and tomorrow is our first day of Lebanese wine
