Known for miles around, one of Lafayette’s biggest annual events was the Lafayette Horse Show, which began in 1935 and continued under various names into the mid-1940s. The show grounds were located on the old Hamlin Ranch off Moraga Road.

The very first horse show was held over a single day, but it quickly grew into a full weekend affair. By 1935, an impressive 160 horses were entered in the events. But the Lafayette Horse Show was about more than ribbons and competition. It reflected the pride of a generation of local ranching families who, even as automobiles were changing the world around them, still felt deeply connected to their horses, their land, and a way of life that was beginning to fade.
