Is that inside rein soft? When these words come out of your trainer’s mouth , what’s your instinctual response? Do you automatically supple your horse to see if she is soft? Or do you check yourself first to make sure you are holding the inside rein in a supple way? I find 9 times out of 10 , making sure the rider is holding the inside rein in a supple way assures the inside rein is not in the way. This means a little more softly open elbow on the inside, giving your horse the feeling you are pushing the rein slightly towards her mouth. And the fist closed around the rein more softly than the outside, which can include soft rhythmical closing and opening of the fist. When it is true that the rider is consistently supple on the inside rein , then she can accurately assess when her horse needs to be reminded to also hold that inside rein in her mouth in a supple way Aviar Saddles Custom Saddlery Payton Medford

Let’s talk about re-learning for a second. I do not like the notion of ‘two steps backwards to take one step forwards.’ To me, the term backwards has a negative connotation and is completely misleading about the learning process. The fact is when we re-learn something we are already familiar with , we are absolutely not learning it the same way we did the first time ‘round. We are learning it with more nuance and subtly. The very fact that we realize that we have more to learn on a familiar subject means that our feel has developed! My students say to me, “I feel like it’s my first day again! I feel lost. “ This is the very experience of knowing what you don’t know. Knowing what you don’t know is a necessary step before Learning what you don’t know. What a gift it is to know what you don’t know! So next time you become acutely aware of some way in which you are lacking as a rider, get excited! And feel empowered, because your learning is about to be accelerated Aviar Saddles Custom Saddlery Payton Medford

Well it’s Monday, so Quinn was jet-fueled this morning! After Sunday off, she is all go and no whoa!! To get her thinking on the half halt, I put her on a figure 8 pattern practicing walk canter transitions with changes of direction. Once she was convinced that all that was coming next was another transition, she started thinking on my half halt! Then I was able to adjust her more towards both medium and pirouette collection, add half pass and flying changes without loss of tempo control, relaxation, and balance 🙌

Happy retirement to Ameera! After being a part of our barn for 15 years, your absence is certainly felt 💙 Where to begin telling the story of Ameera? You have worn so many hats over these 15 years. You were a “failed” sales horse whom earned my USDF Bronze and Silver Medals. My first “from start at 3 to Grand Prix.” From there you went on as a schoolmaster to teach Laura, and many others whom Laura generously allowed on your back. Meanwhile also serving as welcomer and baby-sitter . You helped so many young horses settle into their new home here at Still Hill . In this video you are comforting 3-year-old Quinn, my next up-and-coming “from start at 3 to Grand Prix.” The web of life is an intricate and amazing weave, isn’t it?
Thankfully you haven’t moved more than a mile away and we know you will shine in the Free Rein program . Quinn and I will come visit and we will still ride together, dear Ameera.
Thank you for taking care of us all. Thank you for your kindness, your wisdom, and for the hard lessons too. We can’t pretend we haven’t had those! But mostly, Ameera, thank you for your patience 🙏
