Sneak peek! Mother Nature provided lots of rain this season. Our pumpkin fields are full of large, extra large pumpkins as well as decorative pumpkins and gourds . We will be harvesting next week and pumpkins will hit the farm stand by the end of next week.

The fastest way to get every bird into the coop is to never chase a single one. 🌾

Chickens learn by association, and they learn it fast. Pick one sound and only one, a whistle, a call, the rattle of a scoop against a coffee can, and pair it with something worth coming for every single time you make it. Not most times. Every time. Inside a week or two that sound stops meaning food and starts meaning drop what you are doing and run.

Start it in the run where they cannot go far and the reward lands seconds after the sound. Once it is solid there, try it out in the open when they are already drifting back toward the coop anyway, so the first outdoor attempt is one they were going to get right regardless. Build from there.

Here is the rule that makes or breaks the whole thing. Never use the call for anything the birds will not enjoy. Call them in to hand out scratch, not to grab somebody for a foot check or load a bird into a crate. Do that twice and the sound is ruined for good. Keep it clean and you end up with a flock that pours out of the brush and into the run in under a minute on the afternoon the sky turns the wrong color and you need every one of them under a roof. 🐔
