What a wild bit of weather we’ve had lately! It’s caused a few somewhat minor problems on the farm, so you may not hear from me as much for a little while. Delaying a few plans, some produce no longer available, and just making us some more work to do… nothing major thankfully🫠… we need to do some excavation work, some ditching/pipe/drainage work, and redo some fencing… that earlier post about having more hens available sometime between late august and October… looking more like October to November. Im waiting for my new welsummers to start laying before parting with the older ones. Ive been loving all the green eggs so may keep a few more olive eggers than I planned. Im still playing catch up on large egg orders so I will be holding onto more of the red s*x links longer than planned, though I’ll most likely not keep all my younger ones.
So thats a little update on things. We do have duck eggs and the medium eggs available for pick up at the office, but currently thats all. ✌🏻

Come see me tomorrow at the Bridgeport Farmers Market!! 10-1. I have Purple beans, German pink heirlooms and a variety of cherry tomato heirlooms! Unfortunately we lost a lot of tomatoes of what we would have to storm damage in our garden, but I think there are still lots of good ones to choose from. Please keep in mind, when grown outside with no chemicals, some tomatoes won’t look as perfect, but they will taste even better!!
We will have zucchini bread, lemon cucumbers, peppers, wreaths, squash, probably some things I am forgetting because I am exhausted 🫠.
We will have eggs, but not our normal 70 dozen unfortunately. We will have some of the large dozens, and more than usual number of 18 pks of the mediums. We also have plenty of duck eggs! The mediums are great. If a recipe calls for 3 eggs, I just one extra. Theres even a conversion chart on Google.
I think the weathers supposed to be great in the morning so come out and shop! There is a chance this may be our last market of the season (family reasons-kids come first ♥️✌🏻) so don’t miss us! And we definitely don’t want to take all these wreaths back home…. I might even make some deals!

Who’s looking forward to Sunday’s market?! Pastured eggs, local chemical free produce… this is the time of year my body always feels it’s best—when I eat how food was intended to be!

We return to the market next Sunday! I’m happy to say these German pinks will be with me! I’m not entirely sure how many of anything yet, but it looks like these delicious tomatoes, a few other varieties, a few heirloom cherry tomatoes, purple green beans, zucchini bread, peppers, and more. Our eggs, of course, will be there! Pastured eggs, chemical free produce, grown outside, 2ish miles from the market… I mean it doesn’t get any better 🤣
🤤 German pink never disappoints. Nearly 2lbs isn’t the largest I’ve ever harvested, but it sure did make a great sandwich. One slice filled the large slice of bread side to side.

Now taking zucchini bread orders! These will be made Tuesday and ready for pick up anytime Wednesday at the office at 1580 Joy lane Bridgeport. Orders must be placed by 2pm Tuesday. These are larger loaves of zucchini bread, made with a standard size loaf pan. They’re absolutely delicious especially with cream cheese icing. They also freeze very well. 💚
I have no social media worthy pictures. My kids devour these as soon as they come out of the oven 😂. The picture is just the inside of a loaf and more for Facebook algorithm because without a picture, it gets lost.

More bug facts! 🤪🤣 did you know wasps use tomato worms to lay their eggs in. That’s what the little white things are. What I recently learned about is a similar caterpillar called catalpa. Catalpa happens to be my favorite tree and the leaves on one were totally eaten. When I looked closely, these black caterpillars covered it, but like tomato worms (which are actually also caterpillars), it has the long pointy prickly on its end and was full of wasp eggs! I don’t see many wasps, but after seeing hundreds of catalpas and a couple dozen tomato worms 🐛 with wasp eggs… I’d say next year the wasps may be in abundance 😳. Apparently the catalpa are “special” and some people attract them on purpose. If that’s you, please come collect these 🤣 I guess they’re fantastic for bass and catfish. Im really not a fan-at all!!

Part of trying to have a chemical free garden sometimes means you lose part of your crop-or sometimes all-to bugs. It’s been years since we’ve had these, but I’ve found 12 in the last 2 days. They haven’t done enough damage to make much of difference, but they’re a good example of one challenge of growing chemical free. In the past, we’ve lost entire huge pumpkin patches, corn, cucumbers, squash, and zucchini to bugs. This winter we worked really hard with tilling multiple times at the right times, getting chickens in the right area 🤣, a few more things. It definitely made a huge difference in one of our gardens. We didn’t do our huge pumpkin patch this year, just the little one. There are still squash bugs and cucumber beetles, but not enough its making a difference (yet). Some years we loose to the bugs. Other years we do ok. The Japanese beetles have enjoyed the bean leaves this year, but it’s our second year in a row without a single worm in our sweet corn. The garden is full of beautiful real ladybugs, and Im thinking about investing in beneficial nematodes for the future. A few years ago we never had squash bugs or cucumber beetles, but they have changed our harvest for sure. I am not a fan. They make these ugly caterpillars seem not so bad!
