Taken from an ag page -
A couple weeks ago when I was a volunteer for career day at my daughters school, an idea was brought up that was similar to a Texas Farm Bureau display, but I chose M&M’s, because kids love to see M&M’s!

It worked. Every child that walked up wanted them. Which created a perfect opportunity and focus to show them that there are an estimated 333 Million people in the United States.
The ones that are responsible for growing their food & fiber, make up only 0.60% of that population.

Farmers are highly outnumbered already. With a fast growing population and a decrease in farmers, it seems a little concerning for our future.

From a farmer. Please Read. See why farmers are struggling now.

"Let’s pretend your house payment rises from $1500 a month to $3000 - $4000 a month. Then add on your electric bill which went from $100 a month to $300 - $400 a month. Then add on your health insurance that grew from $300 a month to $600 - $700 a month. Your heating bill went from $200 to $400-$500 a month, oh and you must add on a $75 delivery fee on top of that. Your food bill rises from $400 a month to $800 a month. Transportation costs rise from $100 a month to $400 a month.
Using the low-end numbers your expenses to survive go from $2600 a month to $5675. That’s an increase of $3075.
Oh, by the way, your wages have been cut, then the following month maybe up 5% and then down 25% or more.
Oh, I forgot. If it rains it might take away from your income. Or if it snows at the wrong time.
You’re beginning to see what farmers are facing and have been partially living with.
This spring – right now we are trying to decide what crops to plant. What do we need to continue to produce food. Seed costs, fertilizer costs, fuel costs – up 100% to 300%. This will kill some farms. This will greatly hurt other farms. Some farms will adjust and survive.
That may not seem like anything you should be concerned about.
Until . . .
The grocery stores are more empty. The food you can find will cost more. The medicines you need may be in short supply. Other goods – tires, makeup, clothing and on and on it goes will change in availability.
Pray for your country. Pray for your farmers.”

Why would we give more power to the USDA? Why would we regionalize our cattle market? This compromise bill wouldn't even include all of the Big 4 plants! We need Congress to not further damage it.

A STRAIN ON FOOD SUPPLIES

Ukraine and Russia account for 30% of the world’s exports of wheat, 19% of corn and 80% of sunflower oil, which is used in food processing. Much of the Russian and Ukrainian bounty goes to poor, unstable countries like Yemen and Libya.

The threat to farms in eastern Ukraine and a cutoff of exports through Black Sea ports could reduce food supplies just when prices are at their highest levels since 2011 and some countries are suffering from food shortages.

Anna Nagurney, a management professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, described the consequences as “extremely troubling.”

“Wheat, corn, oils, barley, flour are extremely important to food security,” Nagurney said, “especially in the poorer parts of the globe.”

With ports, airports and rail lines closed and young Ukrainian men fighting the Russian invasion, she asked, “Who’s going to be doing the harvesting? Who’d be doing the transportation?”
