The beauty of growing up is realizing two seemingly opposite things can be true at the same time.

I think somewhere along the way people started believing that if you want a simple life, you have to give up liking “extra” things. I don’t. I love raising my kids at home, growing food, slow mornings, homemade meals, and life on the farm BUT
I also love an afternoon at a winery, dressing like a lady, a good shopping trip, drive thru coffee, wearing my converse around the farm and a passport stamp every now and then.

You don’t have to fit neatly into a box just because someone else thinks you should💁🏼‍♀️

I think that one of the biggest problems in food right now is that people have become more loyal to assumptions than actual conversations.

Because one thing that you will never find me claiming to be is organic. I have beat that horse dead on my platforms & I feel like anyone who has been following me for a while, knows that.

& yet somehow, an entire narrative was created about our farm based on labels we never even used. I have shared our days on the farm for YEARS for this exact reason. Not because we owe the internet an explanation, but because we genuinely believe consumers deserve to know where their food comes from.

But transparency only works if people are willing to listen and learn instead of deciding beforehand what they think farming should look like.

You do not have to agree with our farm. You do not have to shop with us. That’s completely fine. But let’s call it what it actually is. Not deception. Not dishonesty. Just assumptions.

& honestly, that’s a much bigger conversation about food in America. Anyone have any protection crystals or some sage I could borrow? Being cursed over our poultry operation definitely wasn’t on my bingo card this week🔮🪄

An unconventional Mother’s Day from your favorite unconventional farm family🤍

Happy Mother’s Day to all that celebrate. It was the best one yet because not once did I leave the farm✨

Let me preface by saying that this isn’t anger towards the consumers - we fully understand just how much families are struggling in the current economy. If grocery store eggs are cheaper, many people are going to choose what fits their budgets. That’s reality.

However, I think that this situation perfectly highlights the difference between industrial food systems and local “small” agriculture. When demand for local eggs skyrocketed, many small farms stepped up to the plate ready to bat. We expanded flocks & made crucial investments to supply our communities.

Now grocery store egg prices have stabilized again, but our production costs haven’t. That’s the hard reality of agriculture - large corporations often have the support, scale & systems to weather vitality in ways that farms like ours simply cannot.

& MAYBE that’s the bigger conversation here. If we truly value local food systems, humane farming & preserving family farms - those things cannot only matter during moments of crisis or when grocery store shelves are bare or “too expensive.”

These family farms survive because of the communities that support them, not because the government steps in to save them.

So I guess now the question becomes, what can we, as farmers, do for you?🫵🏼

If we want to support small farms, we must first understand them. We may all be in the same industry, but the reality is that many of us are on very different playing fields. As we have dove into grant work over the last several years, this has become more than evident. Access to funding isn’t just about applying. It’s about time, resources, connections, and the ability to take on risk - things that don’t exist equally across farms.

I find myself sitting up after bedtime and in the dance studio parking lot filling out the same applications as corporations that have grant writers on staff or the accessibility to hire a firm that works bank hours. We may be in the same umbrella of “agriculture” but we are standing up to the plate while the major corporations are already stealing home.

This isn’t about complaining. It’s about understanding the system for what it actually is.
