🌾🧂 Salt hay with a story. Grown right here at Cohansey Meadows, our unique salt hay thrives in saltwater intrusion zones where traditional crops can't. By embracing nature’s shifts instead of fighting them, we are pioneering sustainable, resilient agriculture for the future. This salt hay plot was first established in 2023 as part of a USDA-NRCS grant to develop novel saltwater intrusion zone agricultural practices. As the horseshoe crab mating season was winding down last week, our very first tagged crab was found right here at the farm. The female, which unfortunately did not survive, was originally tagged back in 2023 at Cooks Beach in Cape May.

Every year, researchers and volunteers with groups like tag thousands of these "living fossils" across the Delaware Bay to track their migration, population health, and spawning habits. The bay serves as the largest spawning ground for horseshoe crabs in the world. 🧲🦀

Our Spartina cynosuroides (Big Cordgrass) is absolutely thriving in this saltwater intrusion zone. 🧂

Where traditional crops once grew, saltwater intrusion took over. But we weren’t about to give up on this field. Instead of fighting the rising tides, we pioneered a way to work with them - Saltwater Intrusion Zone (SWIZ) Agriculture. 🌊
