FB hive mind - I need help! I’m going to have a vendor spot at Nationals for BiteMe Herbal Goat Treats and want to get some new branded shirts made for us to wear, as well as some to take with us to sell. Doesn’t anyone know of a good company that is affordable, and has good quality fabrics with a decent turn around time? I know it’s a lot, so need suggestions.

I was going through tons of awesome photos from this weekend, and had to laugh at a few. I present to you “Why We Didn’t Bring Home a Big Ribbon This Weekend” or alternatively “My Goats Woke Up and Chose Violence at the Goat Show” 🤣

What a weekend!

Memorial Day weekend always means our first show of the year at the annual Wicked Early Show in Windsor, ME. I always try to make it to this show, even if I don’t see another show for the rest of the year. For me, making it to this shows means a great weekend with old friends and meeting new friends and sharing a love of all of our beautiful goats.

My ladies were looking great, but acting the fool during the show, despite all of our careful practicing at home. They were slightly better on the second day, and honestly, we learned a lot about what we need to work on as we move towards Nationals.

The best part of the whole weekend? Watching my friend Hannah of Prince Well Farm show the hell out of FeatherNScale Orchid 4*M, who at 9 years old, finally got the Grand Champion ribbon she’s always deserved. I moved Orchid along to Hannah when she was just a young nightmare. Hannah took on my problem child and put the love and dedication into her to make her a star. Couldn’t have been prouder.

We were so excited to have our friends Joe and Jamie come out for the weekend all the way from Michigan and help out with the show. They were total rockstars and we can’t thank them enough. Our friends Maureen and Cathy also came out and were a huge help, and took tons of awesome photos for us and our friends. We had such a great time, and I’m just always so happy to be able to spend my weekend with such special people, doing the thing I love ❤️

It’s market day at Steep Falls Farmers' Market and it couldn’t be nicer. We have live music and a Naan making demo going on all day. And best of all? I have ALL the things today 😁

I have a lot of updates and posts to catch up, but in the meantime, I need some feedback!

I’ve been considering making crackers to go with my cheeses at the farmers market. Think I have a recipe down, and they’re delicious. With my shiny new commercial kitchen license, I’ll be able to make these from scratch and offer them as a pairing with cheese. Is this something you’d buy when picking up some nice chevre? Or is it not worth the time and effort?

Yesterday LoneFeather Princess Beatrice wrapped up our kidding season (kind of?) by giving us twins, a buckling and a doeling, in the middle of a beautiful day of sunshine. So relieved that all went well and we were able to wrap up kidding season on a high note.

We did breed three does very late in the season, and there is the possibility that at least one has settled and will be kidding in June. Yuck. But for now, we’re taking a deep breath and diving back into cheese making and the farmer’s market season ahead.

HOW MUCH FOR A GOAT?

Let me say a few words to you, yes you, the person who sends a text to just ask for the price. The person who calls and hears the price and says “I can buy a cheaper goat somewhere else”. I'll talk to you too; the person who doesn't care about papers because I want “just a pet and milk goat to raise”.

No registered goat is “just a pet and milk goat”.

Behind every purebred goat is a BREEDER. I use capital letters to distinguish a breeder from an animal factory for lack of a better word. A serious breeder does not breed goats without documents that protect the integrity of the breed.

Registration papers are records of ancestry documenting the bloodline and enabling you to investigate possible health problems in your lineage.

When you tell a breeder you don't care about the papers, just tell them you don't care about the goats’s health, you just want the cheapest thing you can find!

If you choose to buy a goat from a reputable and quality breeder, this breeder is responsible for every goat’s health.

This breeder will skip vacations, miss sleep, and most of their personal time is dedicated to their goats and their well being. The truly passionate breeder, who loves what they breed, puts all of their time into it. Not only for goats that are sold, but also for every customer who owns a piece of their heart and is now a member of their large family.

A breeder will get his hands dirty, often covered in everything that comes with birth. Because that's what life is all about... in the midst of birth and death is life. The wheel that keeps spinning. A breeder conducts ultrasounds, analytics, emergency vet calls, vaccinations, registrations, researches pedigrees, deworming, hoof trims and provides the base start for the future of the goat in handling, milking and showing.

Last but not least, a breeder CHOOSES the family who is lucky enough to have one of their goats. Yes, you read correctly.

A real breeder chooses who they sell to.
There really is no compensation that can offset the investment a breeder has made.
A good breeder has other criteria for those who want to continue their bloodline, why? Because breeding isn't a responsibility to take lightly, it's a lifestyle choice reserved ONLY for the few devoted people willing to sacrifice.

Since a goat is never “just a pet” he/she is the legacy of the breeder, a little boy’s best friend, a caretaker of a little girl, therapy for the elderly, a member of the family, someone's whole world!

Worth sharing with so much truth in this article. Responsible breeding and possession of many goats is a lifestyle and commitment many cannot understand.

7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Our lives revolve around the goats!
