WARNING about goat health this winter: For those who live in states where winter temperatures go from 80's to 30's in the same day, be advised that current weather conditions can cost your goats their lives. Goats as a species have lungs proportionately smaller than other ruminants, which makes them susceptible to pneumonia (especially interstitial pneumonia). Goats, especially kids but even adults, have trouble adjusting body temperature during such fast and wide swings of temperature. Even though I vaccinate my goats to prevent pneumonia, I lost two bucks during the last (quick) freeze and a heavily-pregnant doe yesterday. Didn't help that she was solid black in color, but the pregnancy stress on her body made saving her a non-starter. This is nothing new, but since so many people are new to goats every year, lots of folks don't know this basic fact. PLEASE go read my articles on goat health, nutrition, and management on the Articles page of www.tennesseemeatgoats.com and in MeatGoatMania's archives. I've been writing these articles for 30 of the 37 years that I've been raising goats. The information you need is available in detail without charge. You just have to take the time to access it. SPRING 2026 KIDDING INTERNSHIPS AVAILABLE AT ONION CREEK RANCH IN TEXAS
Kidding cannot be taught in a seminar. It must be learned by doing it. On-the-job training. There are too many things that can happen during kidding that classroom instruction cannot cover.
Onion Creek Ranch in Texas offers Kidding Internships during Spring kidding season.
Interns live on site at Onion Creek Ranch in excellent facilities and assist with kidding for 7-day cycles. No tuition is involved but you must provide your own transportation and food.
I try to pair an experienced person with a novice, providing 2 people to handle kidding issues.
