It is May 2nd and it’s looking more like blackberry season this afternoon. Yesterday the covers were still on the plants. Today, we can finally see the forecast into mid May without frost and the covers are coming off. Look what’s been growing under those covers! So many buds, blossoms and green berries! We are on track for first ripe blackberries in mid June.

When a dog grows up on a berry farm, he has a refined berry palette. 🤣🍓 I was being closely watched (and begged hard) when I tasted early strawberries from our friend Bill at Cross Harvest Fresh Farm. They are delicious as always. Bill’s season is just starting so watch his page for posts when he has strawberries available.

We’re now in the watching and waiting stage. Although the feeders are up a bit early, a few hummingbird sightings have been reported here in Missouri. Best to have it up now in case an early bird migrator comes through and needs a respite. Thank you as always to Hummingbird Central for their migration map.

🍀☘️ On St. Patrick’s Day, wishing for all of our farm friends, visitors and followers this traditional Irish blessing:

“May the road rise to meet you
May the wind always be at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
the rain fall soft upon your fields
and until we meet again
May God hold you in the palm of his hand”

It’s almost time to stock up on sugar and clean the feeders. The hummingbirds have made their way to Southern Arkansas. The first should start arriving here in SW Missouri right on schedule—early to mid April. Can’t wait! Thanks to Hummingbird Central for their tracking maps!

It was cold at the farm Monday morning, very cold. Our location in a valley falling down to the North Dry Sac River makes it even colder than surrounding locations. Accuracy of our weather monitor was confirmed by neighbors with a -17 reading and our friend 7 miles away in Pleasant Hope with a -14. Overwintering blackberry canes do not typically do well in these extreme lows. We have the rows covered with frost barrier fabric and the snow load on top of the covers may also help insulate the plants. Time will tell how this season’s crop will fare. Until Spring, we will be watching.

The fields are white, but it’s not snow. The frost barrier fabric will protect the blackberry plants from late January and February weather. So far, no worries. But, we are ready if it gets cold!
