Nantucket State of Mind

There is a special kind of magic that happens when the salt air meets Melinda’s palette. We’re calling this piece “Nantucket State of Mind,” and it’s officially ready for its next chapter.

We are so excited to announce that this painting will be coming with us to the Brimfield Antique Show! If you’ve been looking for a focal point that brings that coastal, windswept energy into your home, come find us at Quaker Acres.
We’ll have the tabernacle set up with plenty of new original works, salt-air stories, and maritime history. We can’t wait to see familiar faces and meet new friends under the tent!

Find us at:
• Show: Brimfield Antique Show
• Location: Quaker Acres
• Dates: May 12th – 17th

Drop a comment if you’re planning to head to the show this year!

Yes, there is indeed a harbor where art, love, and nature meet! If you look closely at Melinda’s latest original piece, you’ll spot the signs for “Paintings for Sale” and “Flowers for Sale” right along the fence. Two of our favorite things!

It’s a whimsical scene where mermaids and spouting whales glide past a busy little homestead on the coast. There is a “story within a story” in this one—along with the creative spirit we’re bringing to the Brimfield fields May 12-17. Swipe left to see how this lovely original work might look in your home or gallery!

Find us at the Brimfield Antique Show and Flea Market:

• Location: Quaker Acres, Booths 30-33

• The Vibe: Original nautical folk art, maritime history, and a bit of coastal magic.

Stop by the tabernacle to see all the magic and feel the vibrations beneath your feet!

Luv you all!

A Name Revealed: THE DEFIANCE

“I knew when I first set eyes on the ship ‘The Defiance,’ I felt pressure against my chest that told me the ‘Old Way’ was dying, and my Deep Heart was rising. I was no longer living in the world of the Governor or the General. I was living in the world of the Eastern Hemlock.”

When we last shared this piece with you, it was a work in progress—a silent encounter between a leviathan and a schooner under a sprawling New England sky. We promised that once the final brushstrokes were laid down, we would reveal the name that gives this scene its spirit.

Meet “The Defiance.”

There is something inherently bold about the name. It captures a specific kind of maritime grit—the resolve of a crew on the open water and the unmovable presence of the whale below. The hand-painted lettering at the base now completes the narrative, transforming the painting into a piece of folk history.

From the Studio to Brimfield!

We are thrilled to announce that the finished painting will be making its debut at the Brimfield Antique Show in just a few weeks. If you’re planning to wander the fields, come find us:

• Dates: May 12th – May 17th

• Location: Quaker Acres

• Booths: 30-33

“The Defiance” will be there in person, alongside a collection of our other new works and heritage-inspired finds. We’ve always felt that these pieces belong in a place like Brimfield, where history is lived and shared.

We look forward to seeing many of you there and hearing what “The Defiance” stirs in your own imagination.
luv you all - Melinda & Doug xoxo

“I live my life in widening circles...” — Rilke.

Taking a moment for the soul to expand before the beautiful chaos of the Brimfield Antique Show. As Emily Dickinson, “I shut my eyes to travel,” so I looked beneath my eyelids and painted our little cottage by the Sea. This original piece by Melinda was born from the salt air and the “deep down freshness” of the New England Coast!

This original work titled “Cottage by the Sea” will be sailing to the Brimfield Antique Show, May 12-17! Come see us in Quaker Acres, Booth 30-33! luv you all - Melinda & Doug! xoxo

“In Resistance, We Sail Free”

A Three-Masted Schooner sails through a herd of whales, mighty and free, toward a lighthouse holding its ground.

Melinda painted this original from some place deep — the kind of knowing that doesn’t come from research but from living inside our old 1780s house here at Flowerness Farm, a house that remembers things, a painting arriving already knowing something.

“I painted this last week,” Melinda said quietly. “I didn’t know why. I just… needed to paint it.” We stood there, the painting we found in Melinda’s hands, Melinda’s own painting against the wall. Two ships. Two centuries. The same voyage.

Someone said those words before. In a different century, in a different kind of storm. They were passed hand to hand, quiet as a folded note, bright as a lamp in an upstairs window. Some phrases don’t belong to one moment. They belong to all the moments that need them.

We set out not for calm seas, nor safe harbors,
but for the uncharted and unyielding.

A quiet reminder—
the map is never the thing itself. and in us, there is no map, a play of love, of shipwreck and romance...

Original Hand-painted by Melinda,
where history and imagination meet at the edge of the two seas.

The Journey of a Whale Painting -

On the day after New Year’s, this “Whale & Harbor” original painting by Melinda was available at the local antique show organized by Brimfield Antique Shows at the Host Hotel in Sturbridge, MA! A Cape Cod dealer travelled in the cold early in the morning to purchase this painting and many others in the collection specially created by Melinda for this show New Year celebration!

We don’t take ourselves too seriously here at Flowerness Farm, but we are humbled to see that the broader art community seems to be doing just that! We are so proud that this specific narrative scene was just included and recognized in the Annual Women in Art Auction at Eldred’s on the Cape!

Watching the bidding climb was a milestone moment for us. This painting, which holds so much of our sanctuary’s spirit here at Flowerness Farm in Brimfield, just found a new home for $2,500!

To our supporters—those who were with us in Sturbridge and those who follow our journey here—thank you. Your support means the world to us!

The Next Chapter:

Our next exclusive Backdoor Painting Drop for our paid substack subscribers at special prices as a big thank you is coming in April (more deets will be posted). If you’ve been waiting for the right moment to join the inner circle, now is the time to visit the Substack link in our bio. Our next article on Substack will be about other jaw dropping auction prices in recent sales of Melinda’s work! Stay tuned! luv you all /melinda & doug! xoxo
