Venezia Farms A local worm farm creating incredibly diverse vermicast to improve plant health and soil biology

Venezia Farms is a family run wormery in Brimfield MA that produces incredibly diverse worm castings that we call "vermicast". We start by using three different species of composting worms which provide a great variety of beneficial microbes and bacteria. These worms live and thrive in a Commercial Flow Through (CFT) bin that allows for great air flow, moisture and space for the worms to move. The

CFT also gives us access to vermicast without disturbing the worms and fungi network. We are also able to age our product for longer than 60 days within the CFT which creates an ideal aerobic environment for beneficial bacteria, nematodes and fungi to live and grow until we harvest and deliver to our customers. To practice our charter of sustainability the farm is completely off grid. Our recipe for feeding the worms consists of diverse nutrient rich inputs. All the compost we use has been put through a full thermophilic decomposition process with temperatures above 131 for at least 3 days. Other inputs include organic food scraps, spent mushroom blocks and aged wood chips. This combination makes for great additions to seed starting mixes, top dressing indoor plants and feeding a 24 hour compost tea.

Can you name this food scrap mostly eaten by microbes? Also our worms have been very jealous of all the mushroom posts lately, so had to give them some love.

We are definitely feeling the pressure of spring around the corner here at the worm farm! This may be the last order to go out for a while.. We had to make some late winter changes to the beds, but the worms are certainly working hard now and we sure hope to be ready soon!
