Farm Update! So the Girken pickle cucumbers ended up being more zucchini , which means the zuccs that died early on were my cucumbers. The tomatoes have taken off since being trellissed. The outside cucumbers are starting to pump out the most beautiful delicious cucumbers I've ever grown. And the peppers all have at least one pepper per plant. Some of them the pepper is bigger than the plant! A little before and after. And a bit of a nightmare for me! This morning I worked on thinning and getting them trained. I wint to untangle two vines and stuck my fingers right into a nest. Thousands of babies, one upset momma and one terrified gardener. Those plant got left for a different day!

The tomato 🍅 suckers are back at our place. Welcome to Propagation Station! Grow lights and some space to branch out will hopefully be enough to save these babies and get some good root growth so I can transplant them into the empty row in the hoop house!

Today was a short, but needed day in the greenhouse. I went through and cut off all the suckers and low leaf branches so the vines continue to grow up instead of out.

Cutting back the number of suckers you let produce helps boost the fruit growing from the main stem. Sometimes, if the sucker has been left for a while, I will save it as they do produce fruit as well.

How to trim a sucker is pretty easy once you are familiar with a tomato vine. Off of the main stem (purple), you will see leaf stems (blue) that tend to grow out at a 90° angle. That won't always get to 90° before the sucker (orange) can grow out, at a more acute angle, typically a 45°. I use snips if the stem has gotten too big, but most of them I can rub off or clip with my finger nail.

Farm Update:

Well, it's been a wicked few weeks, but I think we finally have the soil figured out. About 50% of my tomatoes died. But that first row is doing fantastic! As are the girken cucumbers.

Most of the hot peppers were lost, and the cabbages. Zucchini, yellow squash and Hobbs beans are doing absolutely perfect though!

Today, I managed to get all of the tomatoes and one row of cucumbers (Girkens that I want to keep separate) planted! And then I made a major mistake... When turning on your irrigation, always double-check your hose... Sounds like I dumped a few hours (about 5) of well water into the bottom pasture. I'm praying an overnight soak will be enough to save my tomatoes. 😫🤦‍♀️

Sunday was garden day, and we managed to finish laying out the mulch and get all of our water lines patched (including one piece im pretty sure a gopher chewed on while making his home) and got the tomato beds prepped and ready! We thought our fabric would let water pass easily, but it really doesn't, so we decided to hide the lines under the plastic.
