The weather is changing, and we only have a couple months to go before the last of the meat birds are processed and the season is over.

We’ve spent all summer going through the process with EGLE, USDA, MDARD, and the health department to become licensed to process! It’s a lot of paperwork, inspections, and requirements to follow but far nicer than having to drive. When we found out that the closest licensed processor was all the way down by Lansing, it became apparent to us that this was a thing worth doing.

In the spring our processing building will be going up, we will complete our well inspection, and we will be up and running. We are doing this so we can process our all our own birds on the farm and be able to sell them directly to our customers, at farmers markets, and in stores! We are so thankful for the amazing inspectors and officials at all these organizations that have helped us out along the way.

Happy Saturday ☀️We are running on about an hours worth of sleep, so do not be surprised if you see Curt sleeping standing up today! He does not deal with lack of sleep well, and he didn’t appreciate my enthusiasm this morning when I was trying to wake him up. He was like a grumbly little bear getting dragged out of its comfy bed. Off to the fair we go!

A busy end to a busy week! We catered a small pasta bar for a very special event today, and enjoyed every minute of it. So many meatballs rolled 🤣. When you get food from us, it’s all homemade. The meatballs, the sauces, the salad dressing, even the bread. We treat it all like we are cooking for our family. That spaghetti sauce cooked all day! We are now back to making the food for tomorrow. It’s incredible every year to see all those who show up to support all the work and effort these kids put into their animals.

We will not be at the Bay Mills farmers market tonight as we are so tied up with preparing for the buyers dinner and another event, but we will be back next week!

More importantly, tonight is the Veteran’s Appreciation concert at the fair! Our oldest Conner, my father, and Curt’s late Grandpa are all veterans. Many of us have veterans in our family, so get out and support our local veterans!

Did you know that emus sometimes choose a person and can get jealous? Bart is my little lover bean. He wants his neck scratches and his hugs when I come into the pen. Betty loves no one, she just tolerates you, but Bart is sweet.

Last night Curt came in with me to check their feed and give them some love. Bart kept coming between us and circling Curt. He eventually started pulling on his shirt and pants, just little nibbles. But then, in a pretty epic display of pettiness he reached up and grabbed Curt’s ni**le 🤣🤣. Clamped right down and pulled backwards. He put his whole heart and soul into it. Curt let out some very feminine noises, and when Bart let go and he could assess the damage, he was bleeding. Bart came right back to me like did I do good? He won’t bother you anymore! I didn’t get a picture of the actual nibble, but all the moments leading up to it, and Bart coming to tell me about it. Remember when you wanted emus babe? 😉

There is something different about raising your daughter on a farm. She’s both a princess and the toughest little farmhand you could ask for. She can carry a 40 pound bag of feed by herself, wrestle 45 turkeys one a time into a pen, rides a 500 pound boar, and has no fear of anything. But she also loves hobby lobby, holiday decorating, and everything pink and girly. She put sweatpants on under her shorts a couple days ago to protect herself from the turkeys 🤣🤣

It’s been busy moving animals around and getting ready for the BBQ cook off, as well as a farmers market this week and getting ready to cater the buyers dinner at the fair! We are so excited for that on Saturday. Yes, there will be smoked mac and cheese. So. Much.
