Located at 122 Tupelo Street, just off of Metacom Ave. in Bristol, sits a seafood market run by a sweet couple with no shortage of industry wisdom and fresh local catch to share with the community.
Opened in 2022, KJM Seafood is owned by Karen and Jim McCanna. When you walk in, you're greeted by seafood illustrations hand-drawn by the McCanna’s grandchildren, local nautical artwork displayed on the counter, and a decorated case storing finfish, shellfish, prepared goods, and more.
You may recognize the McCanna name, as they owned and operated another seafood business in Warren, East Bay Crab and Lobster, where they processed jonah and sand crab for almost 30 years before Jim branched into consulting to help develop seafood processing lines for companies across New England.
Their new business on Tupelo originally focused on conch procurement and distribution. When the conch market slowed, and locals came knocking for seafood, the McCannas pivoted. They bought a shellfish sorting machine to source from quahoggers, reconnected with local suppliers, and named their new market after their daughters. Karen, described by her husband as “the brains of the operation,” was a schoolteacher in Rhode Island for nearly 40 years. She fondly recalls their kids growing up running around a fish market, and now their grandchildren get to do the same.
