Prescribed burn season🧐🔥

Prescribed burning is often thought of as a cool-season tool, but timing can make a big difference depending on land goals, weather conditions and what a landowner is trying to accomplish.

In the June issue of Oklahoma Farm & Ranch, “Prescribed Burning Beyond the Usual Season” takes a closer look at how burning outside the traditional window can benefit native plants, wildlife habitat and pasture management when done safely and with the right planning.

Harvest is underway for winter wheat classes, with HRW progress slowed by frequent rain across the southern and central Plains and SRW harvest expanding in southern states. Recent moisture has helped stabilize spring wheat and durum conditions in the Northern Plains, though crop ratings remain mixed, and additional moisture will be needed in drier areas. Soft white wheat conditions in the Pacific Northwest remain mostly favorable as winter wheat advances toward maturity.

**ANIMAL MOVEMENT RESTRICTION UPDATE**
While there has not been a confirmed case of New World Screwworm in Oklahoma, ODAFF continues to work closely with our partners at USDA to monitor its spread.

Please see the updated animal movement restrictions below.

New World Screwworm is an invasive pest that primarily infests livestock and wildlife but will infest any warm-blooded mammal. New World Screwworm does not impact food and the food supply is safe.

It is important to frequently inspect all livestock, pets and captive wildlife for signs of NWS.

Report any suspicious wounds or suspected cases of NWS immediately to your local veterinarian, local County Extension Agent, or the ODAFF State Veterinarian at 405-522-6141.

Oklahoma Wheat Crop Update — June 2, 2026

Oklahoma wheat harvest is moving, but this crop is showing just how much drought, spring heat and scattered rain can change the story from field to field.

In this Oklahoma Wheat Crop Update from the Oklahoma Wheat Commission, Dave Deken reports from Noble County as combines continue rolling across the state. Pete Matthiesen of Matthiesen Farms near Billings shares what he is seeing in the field, and Dr. Todd Hubbs, Oklahoma State University extension grain marketing specialist, breaks down what Oklahoma wheat producers should know about prices, basis, global supply and demand.

This update is for producers, grain handlers, rural communities and anyone who wants a clearer look at how Oklahoma wheat moves from the field to the elevator — and why this year’s crop matters beyond the farm gate.

Follow the Oklahoma Wheat Commission for more harvest updates, field reports, market insight and wheat industry news.
