Congratulations to Spin Doctor on being part of the 2026 class inducted to the Horse Stars Hall of Fame! This prestigious honor was launched in 2013 by the EQUUS Foundation and US Equestrian "to celebrate the extraordinary talent of horses and their magical and powerful bond with people." When it comes to Spin Doctor, the Race-bred Arabian has demonstrated his special talents to the highest levels across three distinct careers—racing, dressage, and therapeutic riding—and has brought together a wide range of equestrian enthusiasts.
The striking 2007 chestnut Arabian gelding with a big blaze and four white stockings was bred in Florida by Kathy and Paul Smoke. The Smokes first raced "Spin" for three seasons from 2011 to 2013. His 13-race career was highlighted by six victories, a second-place finish in the Grade 2 Bob Magness Memorial Arabian Derby at Delaware Park, and being among the best Arabian racehorses in the United States in the Grade 1 UAE President Cup held at Pimlico, home of the Preakness, in 2012 and at Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, in 2013.
Then, the Smokes transitioned Spin to dressage. Just two years after his final race, he became the Training Level National Champion for the Arabian breed at the Arabian Horse Association (AHA) Sport Horse Nationals in 2015, where he finished first in a class of 46. Spin combined racing and dressage when he wore his racing silks during a demonstration at BreyerFest at the Kentucky Horse Park in 2018 as part of the theme "Off to the Races."
For his third career, while still owned by the Smokes, Spin has been with Therapeutic Riding, Inc. (TRI) in Ann Arbor, Michigan since 2020. Described as a "true gentleman," he is part of the para-dressage program, adaptive horsemanship classes, and community events.
"I tell riders that horses are like library books," said TRI program director and para-dressage coach Jennifer Beyer. "Every time you check one out, you learn something new. And, the truth is, our horses are far better teachers than I am. Spin Doctor's 'pages' overflow with training and experience that he generously shares with disabled riders. He is my 'go-to' partner to teach lateral work, as he's always keen to show riders just what a shoulder-in or half-pass should feel like."
Beyond his own talents, Spin Doctor is celebrated for bringing out the talents of his riders at TRI.
"There would be no point in training toward those benchmarks if we did not have horses that demanded the same qualities," said TRI executive director Tamera Bollman. "Spin Doctor is that horse. Riding Spin is an achievement for the kids and adults with disabilities that train here, and that makes him a superhero."
Saluting a true Race-bred Arabian Superhero, Spin Doctor!
