Let them scratch! 🐔

There's no worse sound on preg-check day than the vet saying "open" three times in a row.

A few opens are normal - they put some selection pressure on fertility. But past roughly 6-10% in a defined 60-90 day season, it stops being attrition and starts being a problem worth diagnosing.

The trouble is that preg-check is an autopsy. Whatever went wrong happened months ago.

The eight usual suspects: she was thin at CALVING (the biggest one by far, and the direction she's headed matters as much as the score), she calved too late last year, she was a first-calf heifer, the bull failed, heat and fescue, something infectious, missed heats, or semen handling and technique.

One tip that does most of the work: note WHICH cows are open. Late calvers? First-calf heifers? One bull's group? One pasture? A scattered handful is normal. A cluster is a diagnosis.
