2025 was a great year for Morning Wood BBQ. Below are some comments on the season.
Kicked off the year with Mass in May KCBS double in Wrentham, MA. Got calls on 3 of 4 meats both days, with the best being a 2nd in Pork on day 2. Rest were lower calls, but they were against a stacked field which made us feel good. We have some phenomenal BBQ talent here in New England!
Next was Trillium NEBS backyard on Saturday August 8th. Decent results after a 3 month break. Sunday August 9th was the KCBS competition. Again, had calls in 3 out of the 4 meats, but all lower calls. Another small but stacked field. This is where I chatted with Brandon Saldoni and he mentioned one little thing that turned our ribs around after forgetting how to cook them.
The weekend after that was Kora Kares for Kids in Hiram, ME on August 15th. Saturday was KCBS one-meat Ribs. We've never been more stressed waiting for the results during the rib auction. A massively stacked field for this event. Every team was called from 39th place to 1st. We ended up finishing 2nd! Day 2 on Sunday, August 16th resulted in decent calls, capped off by tied in 1st brisket call out of 40 teams (4-way tie and we finished 4th in the tie-breaker). PS: Doing BBQ competitions in back-to-back weekends is the best thing ever.
September brought the Marshfield Community Rib Cook Off on September 6th. We finished 2nd out of 25 teams. Big job that day trying to focus on turning in perfect ribs, while cooking 73 other racks of ribs.
There as a couple month gap until we participated in Commanders Cup on November 8th in Wrentham. Day 1 was a NEBS backyard. We couldn't find good chicken anywhere due to supply chain issues and the results showed. But we killed it in ribs and finished 1st! Day 2 was Toy Drive and it was an OK day. Regular meats we did ok with. Pork was a disaster and meatloaf even worse.
2025 was a breakout year for us, ever only competing in KCBS for 3 years. By far, we had our highest scores in each of the 4 meats in 2025 and hoping to build upon that in 2026!
In 2026, you'll see a similar-ish schedule from us. Perhaps adding in Bristol, CT and Braintree, VT. One thing I do know, there will be a BBQ hardware addition or two to the team!
Sending love to the BBQ family. These are the best weekends ever!
