We wish we’d transitioned our herd to once-a-day milking from the very start.

ONCE A DAY (OAD) milking?!

YES! šŸ¤— let us explain…

After growing up on a conventional dairy farm, on which most farmers milked at least twice, some even three times each day, the concept of OAD milking was foreign, even crazy.

Fast forward to starting our new dairy farm concept, the Microdairy, with the goal of creating a profitable dairy farm with a better farm-life balance. We started with just one Jersey cow but quickly increased our herd to ten, and using only our low cost bucket milker, miking twice-a-day became a daunting task.

At the point of near burn-out from exhaustion, I researched the Microdairy model of New Zealand, and found that many Microdairies use OAD milking models to improve their time management. After reviewing the concept with a dairy in Virginia who also uses OAD with their herd of Jersey cows, we went for it!

And it’s been THE BEST DECISION EVER! 🤠

OAD milking has given us back hours each day to spend as we wish. We could not recommend it more!

Are you a homesteader looking for more time? A farmstead needing those evening hours back for deliveries? An aspiring farmer wondering how you’ll get it all done in a day?! OAD milking might be the perfect fit for your farm! šŸ¤—

Questions on OAD milking?! We’re so excited to offer you every single answer to the questions we had about OAD milking in our downloadable guide! Get the answers we wish we’d have known BEFORE you start!

Our favorite 3 Rules of Farm Business (and yes, these have all applied to us šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’ØšŸ˜®ā€šŸ’ØšŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø).

All our experiences are saved in our Microdairy course- we can show you how we built a 12-cow, profitable dairy farm on 20 acres selling directly to our community and quit a full-time job to farm!

Coming from commodity dairy, we know the transition to direct dairy sales is scary, but we can show you how!

Comment "CUP" for the link to these high quality stainless steel water cups!

On a dairy farm, water is the most important ingredient. šŸ’¦

Jesse was used to the old button-type water cups that cost hundreds of dollars and the cows would ALWAYS break. So you can imagine when I found a deal on a float-type water cup just how skeptical Jesse was.

Turns out, these things are GREAT! 5+ years in and not one broken cup, no freezing due to the Pex setup and well hydrated cows šŸ’¦

Comment CUP and we'll share the link for these time-saving water cups!

This morning, I read a story about a small flower farm pivoting into shipping, and I was struck by a feeling that’s hard to put into words—something like pride, mixed with a quiet sense of belonging.

It’s funny, in a way. Our farms may look completely different—flowers instead of dairy, different rhythms, different products—but the heart of it all feels the same. The long hours, the unpredictability, the constant problem-solving, and the courage it takes to pivot when something isn’t working. It’s all so deeply familiar.

There’s something incredibly comforting about recognizing your own struggles in someone else’s story. It reminds me that even though farming can feel isolating, we’re not doing this alone. There’s a whole community of small farmers out there, figuring it out day by day, season by season.

And in those shared experiences—the hard ones and the hopeful ones—there’s a kind of camaraderie that I’m so grateful for.

For many small dairy farmers, turning your passion into a financially sustainable career is not possible.

The number of dairy farms in PA alone has decreased by 6,000 in the past decade: and Jesse’s family dairy farm was one of them.

We wanted to turn a passion for dairy farming into a real, cash-paying career. But we knew 100 cows of commodity milk wasn’t the answer. We couldn’t afford to build a million dollar dairy farm and creamery.

We had to find a new way.

In 2019, added our own creamery to our 10 cow, 20 acre Microdairy for $30k and have had a successful farm business since!

Paycheck or no paycheck.
Sick animals, healthy animals.

We don't get idea situations but we aren't looking for perfection.

If it weren't for selling our own farms milk directly, we never would've made a living on our 10 cow, 20 acre dairy farm.

Think about that for a second, just 10 cows, milking once a day, an average of about 40 gallons of milk each day. That's all it's taken to make a living.

Selling that commodity? That would be less than $100 per day. Impossible!

šŸ‘‰šŸ»learn our tips and tricks and even our complete step-by-step process in our full Microdairy course. Check the link in our bio!
