‼️Long post, but an important one‼️
We typically try to stay away from controversial topics on this page. There is more than enough room for those conversations elsewhere, and our goal has always been pretty simple, raise good beef, be transparent about how we raise it, and provide local families with beef they can feel good about putting on their tables.
But with all of the recent conversations surrounding beef prices, we felt it was important to share a little insight into where we stand and why we price our beef the way we do.
Our pricing is based on a lot more than what beef is selling for at the grocery store.
Yes, beef is part of our livelihood. It helps us take care of our family and allows us to continue doing what we love. But if making the most money possible was our only goal, there are certainly other ways we could approach this business.
We could sell our cattle and let someone else decide where they go.
Instead, we choose to raise them, care for them, finish them, and sell them directly to families.
Why?
Because we believe there is value in knowing exactly where your food comes from. There is value in being able to look at the cattle in our pasture and know that they are the same cattle that will eventually feed someone’s family. And there is value in being able to build relationships with the people who trust us to put that food on their table.
We also understand that buying beef in bulk is an investment. We are consumers too. We see the cost of groceries, fuel, insurance, feed, fertilizer, equipment, veterinary care and just about everything else continuing to rise.
That’s why keeping our beef as affordable as we reasonably can has always been important to us.
We don’t look at a rising grocery store price and think, “We could charge more.”
We look at our actual costs, what it takes to raise that animal from birth to freezer, and what we need to make this farm sustainable for our family.
And that’s an important distinction.
Raising cattle is hard work. It’s early mornings, late nights, veterinary calls, calving season, feeding, fencing, equipment repairs, planning, and countless hours that most people never see. It means missed events, less time away, and sacrifices that come with choosing this life.
But we wouldn’t trade it.
Especially because we aren’t just thinking about the cattle we have today. We’re thinking about the cattle we’ll have years from now.
The American cattle herd has been shrinking, and rebuilding that herd doesn’t happen overnight. For us, one small way we can contribute is by continuing to grow our own herd.
Instead of selling every animal outright because it may be the easiest or most profitable option in the short term, we’re choosing to play the long game. We continue to calve on our farm, retain the next generation of heifers, and build our herd so that we can raise more cattle in the future.
Because at the end of the day, this isn’t just about the price of a pound of ground beef.
It’s about keeping American cattle on American farms.
It’s about supporting a way of life that provides food for families while also providing a livelihood for the families raising it.
It’s about making sure this way of life is still here for the next generation of farmers and being able to look back one day and be proud to say, we helped build this for them.
And it’s about making sure that when someone purchases beef from us, they feel like they’ve made a good investment. Not just in the meat filling their freezer, but in the farm and family behind it.
We aren’t trying to get rich off of this. We’ve never gotten into farming with that as our goal.
We’re trying to build something sustainable. Something our family can be proud of. Something our customers can be proud to support.
And hopefully, something that will still be here for the next generation.
So while we understand that everyone has different opinions about beef prices, imports, agriculture, and where the industry goes from here, we hope one thing never gets lost in the conversation.
There are families behind every farm.
We’re proud to be one of them. 🇺🇸🐄
