Unfortunately things like this happen all the time. And I also do not breed any speckled Sussex at all for this reason…. The birds can look similar at times. But there is a large difference in the adults and unfortunately someone paid for this misinformation, quite literally.
Most people will look at this and see nothing wrong.
They went for an astronomical amount of money, 3x what they could have went to a breeder and got them for, but do you see anything else?
This is a perfect example of why I say research the breed that you're wanting before you jump the gun and buy. RESEARCH!!!!!!!!
Edited to protect the auction name because they did nothing wrong.
I will come back this afternoon and edit this post to give the answer of what's wrong in this picture
********
⚠️ Edit.... It's a hatchery quality Speckled Sussex hen, an entirely different breed, plus npip and AI clean status doesn't mean anything at an auction because now they probably are exposed to MG or other diseases..
I'm pretty sure the seller knew what these birds were because I saw a breeder list these same birds for sale last week as an Orpington and a Sussex.
I feel bad for the buyer as well because now they will be creating crossbreed chicks when I'm pretty sure they spent $460 on a pair of birds that they thought were Jubilee orpingtons, which also means these chicks will be sold locally to somebody else that's unsuspecting, and when they add those chicks to their breeder flock, because the breeds color is similar, they too will be hatching mixed breed chicks.
Correct down color on a jubilee orpington chick is buff/yellow.
