Emine and Aaylah enjoying a well deserved dinner before starting late night patrols around the farm. The two rams hoping they want to share a bite but once again will be sadly disappointed. All the mommas and babies munching their greens in the background.

We are so excited to see the insect diversity increase each year! When we moved in there was a distinct lack of bugs. Now we have dung beetles, pollinators and lots of beneficial buddies, like this new exciting find- a scolita nobilata wasp! This beauty was returned unharmed to the garden.

Raising a dairy cow on pasture is one of the best decisions you could make for your homestead…

This is because having a dairy animal opens up a whole new world of possible food provisioning. Gardens are wonderful, but they only catch some of your sunlight some of the time.

With a grass-fed dairy animal, 95% of your sunlight that has been unavailable for human food production finally comes within your reach. This is because a cow can turn grass into milk overnight, and grass is by far the farm’s biggest solar energy panel.

This leads to the question: Do you actually have enough pasture for this cow? Turns out, this part of the farm equation is easier to solve than you might think.

In this blog post, Beth Dougherty discusses the ins and outs of raising a dairy cow on pasture!
