I am constantly observing and pondering whether my current breeding program is going in the right direction, as well as reflecting on my previous developmental stages as a breeder. As individuals, we evolve and mature, and so do our breeding programs and breeding focuses over time, whether subtly or dramatically. At different times, our mentors and breeder friends can have varying effects on our breeding. As we progress through our breeding journey, our mentors and breeder friends may change.
At the start of our breeding journeys, we create more less-than-ideal birds due to a lack of proper or better knowledge, and we don't realize it until we've progressed to different stages of the breeding journey. Seeing past photos of our birds and customer feedback is similar to listening to old musical performance recordings from when we were still learning. Realizing how imperfect our work is can be discouraging, but the hard truth is that in order to be good at something, mistakes are the mother of success. The same holds true for animal breeding.
