I am constantly observing and pondering whether my current breeding program is going in the right direction, as well as reflecting on my previous developmental stages as a breeder. As individuals, we evolve and mature, and so do our breeding programs and breeding focuses over time, whether subtly or dramatically. At different times, our mentors and breeder friends can have varying effects on our breeding. As we progress through our breeding journey, our mentors and breeder friends may change.

At the start of our breeding journeys, we create more less-than-ideal birds due to a lack of proper or better knowledge, and we don't realize it until we've progressed to different stages of the breeding journey. Seeing past photos of our birds and customer feedback is similar to listening to old musical performance recordings from when we were still learning. Realizing how imperfect our work is can be discouraging, but the hard truth is that in order to be good at something, mistakes are the mother of success. The same holds true for animal breeding.

I have whimsical salt-and-pepper sisters, mostly white with some black dots, who are looking for a new flock. The blue leg-banded hen began laying light green, sometimes bluish eggs only a few weeks ago. The yellow leg-banded point of laying pullet will begin laying in a few weeks. They will lay plenty of eggs for your family for many years to come. *The sisters are ideal for a family that prefers petite layers due to limited space, as well as small boiled or fried eggs for young children or pickled eggs.*

This group of chicks (straight run) consists of Easter Eggers, Olive Eggers, pure Silverudds, and a few chicks that are 75% American Bresse and 25% Silverudd. They are mostly a few weeks old, with a couple of older chicks, but all under four weeks old, and they have already grown up together and get along well in the same brooder. They are all guaranteed minty blue or green egg-laying breeds or types, with the exception of three American Bress cross chicks with the chance of producing 25% light green eggs. These are photos of their mothers and sisters. Their genetics, which I selectively bred, show a higher likelihood of producing prettier rainbow eggs.

If, like me, you decide not to sell table eggs because they were not profitable enough to justify running a big flock, and you choose not to expand your business by not shipping hatching eggs or chicks to avoid the added stress of shipping live products, there really is no reason to keep a large flock indefinitely. I only keep enough breakfast egg-laying hens for my family and a few neighbouring households to share. The military lifestyle and busier season in my life with a toddler and pregnancy, combined with my dislike of dealing with shipping stress and unhappy customers due to damaged or dead live products, naturally led me to avoid shipping options.

I don't need a large flock permanently or long term for sales because my market is naturally pretty small by choice, but a good breeder should raise a large number of birds to ensure proper selection for their flock improvement regardless of sales. Over the last few years of breeding, I've discovered that the number of birds I raise, keep, and cull fluctuates constantly based on what I like and dislike about what I see, and I eventually end up with a small breeding flock consisting only of the top 10% of birds that I hope to use in my program. Even the top 10% should be closely monitored over the next two or three years to ensure that their health and production quality do not deteriorate, as many birds frequently fail in this regard and become only short-lived rising stars.

So, I don't spend much time planning and worrying about how many birds I should hatch, raise, and keep each year. I raise as many as I can afford, then drastically shrink the number to only keep those who can pass on the most superior gene to the next generation.

Here are two pro tips to increase your chances of getting flashy rainbow eggs like the ones in the pictures from my breeding program.

1. One must source from quality breeders who selectively breed for various color shades, speckles, and heavy bloom. Most beginners make the mistake of sourcing from hatcheries or locals who just breed colored eggers rather than selectively cultivating those traits. It takes more sourcing effort to increase your chances of getting your hands on flashy rainbow eggs rather than sourcing what is immediately available, closest, or cheapest.

2. Many people lack the patience to raise day-old chicks and look for point-of-laying pullets and hens. What beginners don't realize or overlook is that it is best to start a new line/genetic with a day-old chick to monitor their genetic hardiness. When getting older birds, you don't know their health history, and they may have acquired immunity and be carriers of diseases rather than natural immunity.

Understanding true dual-purposeness in chickens does not come naturally with breed names, and it may not until people start processing their own birds to see what's beneath the fluff and see for themselves that substantial meat comes from a specific body type of well-bred birds. I've started to see the potential for dual-purpose in the standouts of mixed breeds that I've bred to serve as homestead birds for my family table. It is about breeding and identifying exceptional individuals, whether hybirds or purebreds, while locking in desirable characteristics such as a long back, wide leg spacing, low tail angle and wide tail width, balanced stance, and breast meat.

Percy is my standout and the only rooster I am keeping from the landrace project pair A. Percy's parents have demonstrated longevity, natural immunity, and dependable high production over the last three years. Finding an offspring who outperforms their parents means you can move forward with your project. To find Percy, I hatched and raised at least 20 roosters from pair A. Growing out a large number of roosters until you find the right one is a must when it comes to breeding for quality.

Ingrid is *not my breeding*, and I acquired her from a breeder in another state. She used to lay minty green eggs with white speckles in the picture, but as she's gotten older, she's started laying plain blue eggs. Ingrid is my table egg layer, and she is healthy and dependable. Ingrid will be a good fit for a family looking for a petite chicken breakfast egg layer.

I try not to keep more pullets and hens than my family and two neighbor households need for table eggs. I've enjoyed raising this lovely blue pullet, but it's time for her to join a new flock and family who will enjoy her as much as I have. She is a multigenerational olive egger, and I expect her to lay green eggs with possible speckles, but there is a small chance that different egg colors will be produced. Here are photos of what my new spring layers (2025 fall hatch) from my multigen olive egger program have produced as examples of my work.
