Now that it's finally warming up, I hope everyone’s planting season is going well and that your gardens are coming together.

If you’ve gotten plants in the ground and realized you still have a little extra room to fill, I still have a good selection of tomato plants available this weekend at two locations, my friends BadArt.Co in Oregon and our self serve driveway stand in Brooklyn.

I pulled out all of the stragglers I have, and found that I still have a lot of fun varieties left, especially dwarf tomatoes for smaller gardens, raised beds, and containers, plus micro tomatoes that are perfect for little patio or picnic table pots where you can snack on them all summer. I still have 125ish different varieties available at the stand at my home, but for many there's only one or two plants left.

To help get the remaining plants find good homes, I've dropped prices:
Single plants: $4
5 or more plants: $3 each
10 or more plants: $2 each

The self serve plant stand at my home is open from 9a-7p daily, and Bad Art Opens at 2pm this weekend.

Here's what I have left as of Friday evening:

I start all seedlings carefully and intentionally, focusing on strong root systems and steady growth. The seedlings are grown in newspaper pots, which aid in root development and avoid plastic.

I have a large selection of varieties well suited for containers, patios, raised beds, and small-space gardens, including both determinate and dwarf tomatoes.

Dwarf tomatoes are a newer breeding project that combines the rich flavor and diversity of large heirloom tomatoes with a more compact growth habit. The plants are smaller and sturdier than traditional indeterminate plants while still producing full-sized fruit, making them a great option for containers, smaller gardens, or just as a great way to add more variety. I find dwarfs exceptionally easy to grow, they don’t need to be pruned, they’re easy to support and have all of the flavor of the old heirlooms!

We've been feeling so thankful since Sunday's sale!!

It blows me away every year to see how many people have made these plants part of their spring tradition. Seeing so many familiar faces, longtime friends, and returning customers, along with meeting new people who have heard about the sale, makes it such a joyful day.

And the biggest thanks goes to the crew of friends and neighbors who show up to help make it all happen. There’s no way I could do this on my own.

These plant sales really feel like a testament to community. It reminds me every year what’s possible when people show up for each other.

Hello Tomato Friends!
I’m looking forward to seeing you tomorrow for the first week of our sale, but if you can’t make it out this week, come for our Spring Pop Up one week from today!

A few quick reminders:
- 11:00 am–2:00 pm on Sunday at N8431 County Road E, Brooklyn, WI 53521
- Please bring a container to carry your plants in. The tomatoes are in newspaper pots, so something hard-sided works well.
-Plants are $5 each, cash is preferred, but we can take Venmo
-Please feel free to walk around the gardens (as long as you ignore the weeds!)

While we won’t have additional vendors with us this weekend, we will have worm castings from our friends at Utopia Gardens and Worm Works LLC. available for sale: $26 for 5 lb bucket, $8 for 4 lb bag, $5 for 2 lb bag. Worm castings are a gentle, slow-release fertilizer that supports soil health, improves structure, and helps plants grow strong without the risk of overfeeding. They’re especially great for transplanting and getting young plants established.

Tomato Sale FAQ

-- When can I plant my tomatoes outside?
The average last frost date here is around May 7. Looking at the forecast, it looks like the earliest we could plant would be after Mother’s Day. We’re looking for nights staying above 45–50°F and no frost in the forecast. Waiting a few extra days is usually better than planting too early.

-- How do I care for my seedlings until then?
Water regularly and keep them outside in full sun during the day when it’s warm, and bring them in at night if temps drop below about 45–50°F. Try not to let them dry out completely or get too cold.

-- Can I plant them in the newspaper pots?
You can, but I usually unwrap them or at least tear off the bottom so the roots can expand more easily.

-- How do I keep track of what I bought?
A lot of people have been taking photos of the “tomato trading cards” I have up as labels for the sale. It’s a simple way to keep track what varieties you planted in case a tag gets lost later in the season.

Around this time of year I get a few messages from customers saying they had their best tomato harvest ever with our seedlings. Healthier plants, earlier and bigger yields, enough to share with neighbors and friends. I appreciate those messages so much, and they're often on my mind while I'm caring for the seedlings. I'd like to share a few of the reasons for why I believe this happens.

At this point, most of the seeds I start have been saved from my own garden. Each year I save from the plants that perform best here, so over time they become more adapted to our specific conditions. Our soil, our weather patterns, our disease and pest pressure. It’s a slow process, but it leads to plants that are better equipped to thrive here.

Most seeds and plants sold commercially are grown and selected in completely different climates and are meant to perform “well enough” across a wide range of conditions. I'm trying to do something different. By saving seeds year after year in the same place, I’m working with plants that are learning this environment more deeply over time.

I also put a lot of thought into the varieties I grow. Instead of choosing for consistency or perfect appearance like big box stores do, I'll always choose for flavor. If I’m going to grow a tomato, I want it to be one that’s actually worth eating. I have definitely grown a few varieties that were a clear "nope" in the flavor department, and those seeds were retired from my collection.

I also intentionally grow and sell smaller, sturdy seedlings. They might not look as impressive at first, but I’ve found they transplant much better. Larger plants often stall out after planting, while smaller ones settle in quickly and start growing right away. My plants are all grown organically, and with minimal plastic thanks to our newspaper pots.

And finally, these plants are grown slowly, by hand, with love. I spend a lot of time with these seedlings. I've admired each one, sang to them all, given each of them love and appreciation, and thought about the harvests and joy they'll bring. For me, this is what buying local for your garden really means.

If you’re putting in the effort to grow your own food, you deserve a plant that will thrive and a harvest that tastes truly delicious.

(I just shared this in our newsletter, but thought it would be good to share here too!)
