before you enter the dining room ..
before you even take a bite of food .. the tone is set.
you’re already taking in the experience.
the lighting.
the music.
the table.
the aroma coming from the kitchen.
the colors.
the composition.
the details you may not consciously notice—but absolutely feel.
just like plating: we don’t experience food with our taste buds alone.
we eat with our eyes first.
and that first visual impression creates an expectation of what’s about to happen next.
THIS is why plating matters.
Not because every plate needs to look like fine art.
Not because food needs to be complicated or overly decorated.
But because presentation is part of the story.
Before the fork ever touches the plate, the plate has already said something.
It tells you what to expect.
It creates anticipation.
It communicates intention.
And as chef and food stylist we have an opportunity to control that first impression.
Because the experience doesn't begin with the first bite.
It begins the moment the guest encounters the food.
