My heart is full after traveling to Central Europe with and meeting such amazing producers, whose wines we have the privilege of working with on the East Coast. The regions’ rich history never failed to amaze and inspire.. Thank you to all of these passionate humans for opening up their homes and sharing a glimpse of what it’s like to work with the vines and in the cellar in this part of the world. Was an absolute honor..Until next time…❤️❤️❤️

“Kosmas is an unknown bucolic variety of Greece, single handedly saved from extinction by winemaker Giorgos Balatsouras of Doric wines (). Hyper local to the tiny Koniakos village, surrounded by fir forests at 800-1000m, there are still a bunch of wild tree climbing vines of Kosmas, which are being harvested and vinified as a special bottling. All vinifications of Kosmas follow the area’s traditional protocol, based on the availability of natural resources, with fur branches used for cap management, secreting some resin which adds texture and protection to the otherwise do-nothing process.”

“Vranac was introduced to South Herzegovina during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The name ‘Vranac,’ meaning ‘black horse,’ highlights the grape’s dark color as well as its strength and power. It produces dense, deeply-colored red wines with flavors and aromas that range from sour cherry, blackberry and blackcurrant to chocolate, mint and vanilla. This monovarietal wine made by the Tvrdos Monastery in Bosnia-Herzegovina is aged for 2 years in 100+ year old Monastic barrels, and is oddly refreshing — even tart at times — despite being jet black in color and 15.5% alcohol.”

“Serifiotiko is the epitome of Greece. An island grape that doesn’t hide its warm climate origins. Serifos island’s eponymous variety is just like the island; salty, textured, and rough around the edges. Although Serifos is part of the posh Cycladic cluster (that more famous islands like Santorini and Mykonos are part of), Serifos is the least developed of the bunch and stubbornly didn’t even have any paved roads till recently. This stubbornness of the locals is what preserved this pink-skin variety that we are now getting to know, and world unique farming techniques like the crawling vines (“aplotaria”) which create a protective blanket against the piercing sun and gusty winds.”

“The Dunaj grape is seemingly incongruent between what you smell and what you taste. When we first encountered it, we assumed it was some sort of hybrid or PIWI grape. The Muscat-like aromas, deep Teinturier color, grip, acidity and alcohol didn’t seem possible with low intervention winemaking. As it turns out, it’s a crossing between Muscat Bouchet and Blauer Portugieser which was then crossed with St. Laurent. Its birth dates back to the early 1950s, but it didn’t become officially registered until the late 1990s. Late budding, late ripening, resistant to botrytis and frost, it certainly fits the bill for being applicable in Southern Slovakia. Today there are roughly 60-70 hectares in Slovakia and it’s the first to sell out at the winery. Spontaneously fermented in 700L vats and then aged on the lees for 11 months in smaller oak barrels, the only addition is SO2. This is one of those reds that you can’t quite put your finger on so you revisit it incessantly until it’s gone.”
