Top 5 takeaways from Essence Fest 2026
Your girl is finally resting after an absolute whirlwind of events at Essence Fest! 🤎 Reflecting on this experience has me overwhelmed with gratitude, full-circle moments, and a renewed fire for my craft.
Here are my top 5 takeaways from Essence Fest 2026:
A Double Full-Circle Moment: From being a 2020 Essence PowerTool Pitch Winner and being featured in the Mother’s Day Collab, to stepping onto the stage to speak on "Reclaiming the Aisle." I admitted on stage that a Joann’s Fabric grant during Covid was the actual foundation for what has now grown into my 2026 CTE program. To go from strict Caribbean parents in Brooklyn/Far Rockaway who wanted me to be a doctor or lawyer, to speaking truth on the biggest stage celebrating Black womanhood without being dismissed? God is good.
Protect Your Rest: I stayed in the Garden District, and it reminded me that where you lay your head on business trips matters. It was peaceful, walkable, and right by the local rail. But more than that, knowing NOLA's history, I deeply felt the presence of the ancestors who walked before us in that space. Honor your peace.
The Power of Community: The Family Reunion at the Four Seasons was unmatched. Connecting with fellow founders, followed by screaming my lungs out at the concerts, watching our hip-hop and R&B queens command the stage? Pure magic.
Breaking Out of the "Pastry Box": As a Pastry Chef, biting into the chocolate pralines and fried chicken beignets at Loretta’s made me question my entire life. 😂 It wasn't about "what can I sell next?" It was a creative wake-up call. Why have I boxed myself into just cakes? I came home, opened my old culinary textbooks, and decided I’m ready to savor and explore every dessert known to man.
I’ve Still Got It (Barely!): If you know the logistics behind a massive festival—shoutout to my days vending at Vegandale with 30k people—you know it takes a village. I surprised myself by surviving a back-to-back schedule. Listen, your girl isn't getting any younger, but the stamina showed up!
Thank you, Father God and Mother Earth, for your grace, and thank you to the NewVoices, Weloveus, and Essence family for the space to share my truth. Sistah Chatta Allison Isom- Roberts
