TASTING TONIGHT 6-8: The Indescribable Saar Wines of Florian Lauer Peter Lauer▪️VDP 🦅

Florian Lauer is a remarkably singular figure in the landscape of German wine. He’s a remarkably singular figure in person as well. You can’t actually be a winemaker as good as he is any other way.

Florian Lauer makes dry tasting Riesling in the village of Ayl from particularly good slate vineyards on and around the famous Ayler Kupp mountain/vineyard. He took charge of his family’s historic estate in 2005 and quickly transformed it into one of the greatest addresses for wine in all of Germany. He’s particularly good at turning in finely-tuned–engine style Rieslings, broad and weightless, dry or dry-tasting, always high acid, and very expressive, often with a signature spice note.

Lauer’s also pretty fun. He was once the drummer in a black metal band. And, once in an interview, called his wines “very drinky.” We couldn’t agree more. And if you visit the area, we do recommend staying at his Wine Hotel. WEINhotel Ayler Kupp

Join us tonight to taste through several Lauer wines and learn literally everything there is to know about him.

TONIGHT 6-8: Lisbon We Love You! 🇵🇹💛
Lisbon is a glorious place to visit in the summertime, or anytime really. The largest city in Portugal, as well its capital, it’s on the west coast of the peninsula, where the Tagus River channels into the Atlantic. It’s also the center of its own wine region, and as you might expect in a place with warm, maritime summers, there are lots of cool, fresh bottles to be discovered.

All three of tonight’s wines have one important thing in common; they’re field blends. Meaning there are several or many different varieties of grapes growing together in the vineyard. And then most likely, they are harvested together, and then pressed together. This is a long tradition in Portugal, and was actually the norm around the world for most of our history. Today, with tastes leaning lighter, and the climate growing more difficult, old vine field blends can more easily produce the sort of fresh, balanced wines many of us are looking for. Portugal, more than anywhere, has the goods. As Viuva Gomes likes to say…

The future is made with the past.

So, field blend Curimenta from old-vine newcomer Chinado, field blend Palhete from our old friends at Espera, & field blend Tinto from the great Viuva Gomes. A perfect set of wines for mid-August gatherings!

TONIGHT 6-8: The wines of Claudio Maritotto!

Timorasso is a rare, difficult to grow, thick-skinned white grape indigenous to Piemonte that was rescued from extinction just a few decades ago. A number of exceptional winemakers have devoted a lot of time and energy to the literal revitalization of this grape.

Claudio Mariotto is our focus tonight. The winery was founded in the 1920’s by Claudio’s great-grandfather, and his grandfather and father have also worked these fields. It is in Vho, on the first hills behind Tortona, on the south-eastern tip of Piemonte. Today Claudio works with his partner Rosanna, his brother Marco and his mother, Piera. He sleeps in the room he was born in, in the family’s old country house. He listens to Black Sabbath and smokes ci**rs all day. He’s a character, and he’s somewhat obsessed with idea of the American “old west.” He rides motocross bikes around the vineyards of the region with his good friend, and fellow Timorasso grower Walter Massa. The Mariotto clan has a fair amount of land and they also grow other varieties, but Timorasso is the star and makes up most of the production. Farming is all organic. All the wines are 100% Derthona Timorasso.

Tonight’s wines are a tight cluster: same grape, same producer, same sub-region, very similar vinification…. Given all that, the differences are striking. And isn’t that what wine is all about? Join us tonight for a journey into a chapter of Piemonte’s history that was almost lost. Claudio Mariotto

TONIGHT 6-8: Wet Hot Hungarian Summer! 🇭🇺
Palinkerie Founder Athena Bochanis Behind the Bar!
We love a hyper-focused importer. Athena finished law school in 2012 and immediately turned around 180 degrees and became an importer of Hungarian wines, founding her company the next year. Since then she’s been a leading light for the country’s wines in the in the US, bringing a diverse array of winemakers to a greater audience than in the past. Her work has made a major difference for Hungarian wine in the US. And that’s a great thing. The wines are excellent, and offer the kind of complexity and value you can only find together in regions with a long history of making truly great wine.

“Our collection represents my favorite finds from Hungary’s burgeoning wine scene today: hand-crafted, small-batch, natural and organic wines from distinctive grapes. Wines that reflect Hungary’s diverse microclimates and its long history of winemaking. Wines imbued with the adventures, successes and struggles of centuries past, yet they move forward, hopeful, towards the future ahead.” Athena Bochanis

Tonight she pours some of the most summer-friendly wines in her book; a Pet Nat WASSMANN biodynamic winery , a Grüner Villa Tolnay Winery & a Pinot Bukolyi Marcell Organic Wines

Apex Beauty! If you’ve been crushing Rosalind Reynolds’ Pink Lemonade for awhile already, you know it’s unbeatable on brilliant sunny days and sultry summer evenings. You may not know that it’s blend of all five grapes from Mendocino’s Ricetti vineyard, picked in separate passes and pressed separately for freshness and balance. Already obsessed or just about to buy that first bottle? Think of this as a PSA: Nothing lasts forever, including Pink Lemonade!
