Fun City Bees

Rose petals make good honeybee rafts.

Hot day to spend an hour and a half in Long pants and a voided jacket, sweating like a pig, but both hives inspected and looking good. Lots of girls ready for those linden trees to bloom, and lots more on the way.

The best thing about my new glasses? I can actually see bee eggs now!

Right on schedule. 21 days from the day I hived the new bees, the first new workers are starting to emerge.

Made the trip to Wilkes-Barre to pick up our new bees today. Safely home and in their hive now.

This Winter took its toll on the bees, so I'll be starting with a new queen and new bees again this Spring. I had planned on getting my bees from NYCBeekeeping on April 11th, however there are no more packages available for that date, so I will be making the trip to Wilkes-Barre on April 18th to pick up my bees myself. If any other NYC area beekeepers are in the same boat, let me know. I have room for a few more bee packages, we can work something out.

Fun City Bees will be adding a second hive this year at a second location in Bushwick. Diana will be actively helping with the hives this season, so I just ordered her protective gear. So much sexier than mine.

Dublin 6 is experiencing a bee invasion of sorts. Street art depicting a faceless bee, occasionally holding clover, can be seen on many walls in Rathmines and Portobello. We’d love to know what it’s all about. Video: Bryan O'Brien

Jake Gyllenhaal's character in the Broadway play Constellations is a beekeeper. Tonight is opening night and some of the cast will be getting Fun City Bees honey as a gift from the playwright. Jake and I are not Facebook friends, so I don't think I'm spoiling the surprise. Thanks Meg P***a, beekeepstress to the stars, for the connection.
