If you have caught one of our Lives, you have probably heard us say it before...

“Check out the website!” 😂

But there is actually a whole lot more over there than just a place to buy hatching eggs.

Wandering Shepherd Farmstead is a first generation husband and wife farmstead here in Brooksville, Florida, and our website has slowly grown right alongside the farm.

You can find:

🥚 NPIP Certified American Bresse and Rainbow Hatching Eggs

🐓 Local American Bresse and Rainbow chicks, pullets and laying hens as available

🍗 Our Farm to Table American Bresse and Cornish Cross whole chickens

🐑 Hair sheep and other livestock availability

🏡 Farm sitting services for fellow farm and homestead families

🐔 Hands on poultry processing classes

🐇 Updates and an interest list for our growing rabbitry

🌱 Farmstead feeding essentials and tools that we make and actually use here on the farm

🚜 Our Farmstead Essentials page, where we share equipment, incubators, fencing, poultry supplies and other tools that have earned their place around Wandering Shepherd

And for our local customers, we are also currently taking reservations through Messenger for our next processing of American Bresse and Cornish Cross.

Our next batch of American Bresse will be processed and in the freezer by next week, so if you have been waiting to get one, now is a good time to reserve.

Some things can be shipped. Some things are just for our local Brooksville community. And because we are a working small farmstead, availability changes with the seasons, hatches, processing days and whatever the animals decide our plans are that week.

We are not trying to be a big box farm store.

We are building something small, practical and intentional, one hatch, one pasture move and one project at a time.

Take a wander around the farmstead 👇

The Goose would like to share a seasonal reminder for fellow chicken keepers, especially those new to chicken tending!

Your hens will be slowing down soon in egg production. That is OKAY! Nothing is wrong. This is totally normal. As the days get shorter, your hens’ bodies naturally start slowing down their reproductive cycle. Once daylight drops, you’ll start seeing your egg counts decrease.

Then comes THE MOLT.

First, it will look like you had a chicken explode in your coop 😂 This is normal and totally okay! They’re dropping old feathers and growing new ones. You may see feathers EVERYWHERE, and your egg production can drop significantly or even stop for a little while.

After the molt, the shorter days continue to tell their bodies, “Alright, time to take it easy.” Their focus shifts away from producing eggs and toward maintaining themselves through the shorter days. You’ll see your egg counts drop with both of these seasonal changes. Completely normal. Nothing to panic about. Just the natural cycle of the year!

You CAN use supplemental lighting in your coop to encourage continued egg production through the winter, but we personally do not do this. We let our girls follow the natural cycle of the seasons and take that much-needed break from laying before they naturally ramp back up as the days get longer again.

So don’t panic! You’re not missing anything or doing something wrong with your flock. They aren’t dying or falling apart. They’re just participating in this natural cycle we’re all in called life. ❤️🐔
