I found this spider feasting on a large grasshopper this morning in my garden. The Argiope aurantia is a species of spider, often called the yellow garden spider, golden garden spider, zipper spider, zigzag spider, black and yellow argiope, along with many other names. Its scientific name translates to "gilded silver-face". A welcome friend in my the garden. Even though they I have often caught myself in a tangle with their webs. #

Look what is in my garden on my purple passion flower vine! This is a Passiflora incarnata, a native Florida variety of passion flower. I had a whole line of the Lacewings on it in the evening but didn’t have my camera.

Lacewings are beneficial insects and great at pest management. The adult Lacewing feed on pollen, nectar, and honeydew. The larvae are predators of a variety of pests: aphids, whiteflies, thrips, leafhoppers, spider mites and mealybugs.

I grow a large variety of native and pollinator plants to attract beneficial insects. It’s great to see them showing up and providing chemical free pest control. I don’t spray with chemicals so mI don’t hurt the pollinators, or expose my edible plants to chemicals I don’t want in my food.

What beneficial insects are you seeing in your garden?

Katuk or sweet leaf, (sauropus androgynus) flowering-such pretty little flowers. The plant is edible and highly nutritious and has been referred to as a “multi-vitamin leaf”. The leaves can be sautéed, added to soups, curries, stir fry’s, eggs and more. It is very tasty, compared with fresh peas, with a hint of nutty flavor. The young shoots are similar to asparagus. You can eat the flowers and fruits, and tender shoots. There is some concern about eating Katuk raw, as it has medicinal alkaloids. The alkaloids will degrade with heat, so it is safest to eat cooked. Cooked is how the traditional recipes used it- always do your own research. Its leaves are high in protein and its rich in Vitamins A, C, folate, Iron and more.
It tolerates our hot humid Florida climate (zones 9-11) well, and can be a great addition to an edible Landscape. It can work as a hedge, shrub or in a pot. It is not frost hardy so it does need to be covered/protected in a freeze or brought in. It is a evergreen perennial where it doesn’t freeze.

What do you do with Katuk? It’s always nice to hear new recipes or how others use it?
