This issue features Venice and its deep relationship with wine that dates back many centuries. Its origins are traced to Roman times. The area that would become Venice, along the lagoon and on islands, was inhabited during the Roman period. In medieval times, Venice later evolved into Europe’s major trading hub for fine wines from 700 to 1769. While Venice has vineyards, it isn’t renowned for wine. World-famous wine areas lie nearby in the Veneto, producing Pinot Grigio, Prosecco, Amarone, and Suave. Wine is an essential part of Venetian cuisine and culture.

The 25th anniversary of 9/11 happens this year. I started reflecting on all the amazing times that we enjoyed at Windows on the World Restaurant and Cellar in the Sky. This restaurant, once perched atop the World Trade Center, was more than just a dining destination—it embodied the height of New York's cultural and culinary scene and served as a gathering place where people created lasting memories. After searching our archives, we uncovered vintage photos from a beloved Long Island wine event in April 2001. They are featured in our Vin History article.

Lance Berelowitz unlocks Portugal’s Wine Renaissance. Stacy Slinkard explores the small Tuscan Island of Gorgona, where wine giant Frescobaldi and the Gorgona Penal Institute have partnered on a program where prisoners make wine.

Nicolas Post, Master of Wine, reveals how the Bordeaux wine industry is adapting to Global Warming and allowing winemakers to blend new varietals into their wines.

In Memoriam
Carlo Petrini, Founder of Slow Food

Bra, Piedmont, Italy, Slow Food International has announced that its founder, Carlo Petrini, passed away in his native town of Bra on Thursday at the age of 76.

“Mr. Petrini was a visionary and activist who founded Slow Food, the international Terra Madre gathering, and the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo. Through these initiatives, he brought to life a global movement rooted in the values of good, clean, and fair food for all, connecting communities, farmers, food artisans, cooks, activists, and young people worldwide.
“Those who sow utopia reap reality” - a phrase Carlo Petrini loved to say - encapsulates his life. He firmly believed that dreams and visions, when they are just, capable of inspiring collective participation, and pursued with conviction, are not impossible to achieve.
He combined the ability to dream with a deep sense of joy and collective purpose, paving concrete paths toward social change. His work was always rooted in collaboration with others, especially younger generations, and guided by passion, empathy, and fraternity.
His energy, his determination, and his lifelong dedication to others will remain a guiding force for the entire Slow Food movement and for all those who shared his vision.”
