Have you heard the news of exploding trees? Well as cool as this could be, thankfully this does not actually happen.

The trees can undergo a different issue called frost cracks. During extreme temperature fluctuations, you may hear the pops and crackles of frost cracks occurring. These are vertical cracks in the wood caused from the water and sap in the phloem and xylem freezing and expanding. This can cause issues for trees because it creates an opening for microorganisms and insects to damage the wood.

This commonly occurs in smaller/thinner trees, like Birch and Maples, but it usually will not kill the tree.

What you should be on the lookout for is the cold temperatures ahead! Be safe these next few days!
