Dear friends and family of the HMS,

Our dear friend, patron, and creative supporter, Gilbert, needs our help and support more now than ever. Gilbert was not only a dear friend of George, but was also the man behind the scenes creating our beautiful advertisements, menus, promos, and band announcements. He put his heart and soul into the Half Moon to help bring George’s vision to life, but even more so after his passing.

Gilbert was there for the friends, family, and staff during our insurmountable grief all while grieving himself. He helped launch our very beloved brunch buffets as well as provided his time and energy to help sell the Half Moon during the pandemic. And personally, Gilbert was an anchor holding me together in the storm which was the hardest year of my life. I kindly ask that we shower Gilbert with love and support during this challenging time.

Dear Half Moon friends and family. We are a bit late posting this, but it is bitter sweet that we share the news that the Half Moon Saloon has been sold and will eventually reopen with new found love and life. The new owners intend to keep my father’s spirit alive and well as they look forward to bringing life back through the doors. Please be sure to help support this wonderful team once open, and pour a drink for our dear George. Salud! 🍻 💃🏽 🕺

Edited to add: it will not be reopening as the Half Moon as far as I’m aware. But whatever the name, the fun and memories to be had will be just as amazing.

This year the Brownsville Society for the Performing Arts presents the 24th edition of the Brownsville Latin Jazz Festival in virtual format on October 22, 23, and 24.

Dear Half Moon friends and family,

I’m sad to tell you I have had to make the hard decision to close the Half Moon indefinitely. We gave it our best shot and had hoped to get back to our roots and the vision our beloved founder and father had, but the coronavirus has proven to be a hurdle that we won’t be able to recover from. We hope to find a new owner that can give it the love, time, and vibe that Downtown Brownsville desires. If you or someone you know is interested in buying the half moon, please message us here.

I would like to personally thank our loving and dedicated staff and patrons who have all been through so much this past year. Your love, support, and loyalty has been unwavering and you all forever hold a special place in my heart. Love, Ria and the Friends and Family of George Ramirez

Edit: Thank you for all the love and suggestions. Unfortunately the decision to close was based on many factors and not just the quarantine, although this is certainly the nail in the coffin. The small business support people have kindly suggested comes in the form of loans and this isn’t a viable option at this time. I’ll just buy some lottery tickets...you know, just in case. Dear Half Moon Friends, as we had expected, the governor has stated all bars/restaurants must close to in-person service. We are working on options for carry-out, but not sure we will find the supplies to do this. Please let us know if you’d be interested in carry out options.
