We will be at the crystal springs market this weekend in Brunswick. Loving this new porch for our smokers next to our kitchen, what a dreamy setting to create.
What does “local food” mean to you? I think about this as I overlook our forest garden, that is actually a testament to what perennial plant-based agriculture can look like… Apple trees with native ground nuts, elderberries, obscure herbs & greens…. Resilient experimental food crops for an uncertain future and a rapidly changing climate. We are planting things that are two zones south from here to make accommodations for the change in climate and migrating animals, we got spice bush growing, but we still haven’t seen any spice bush swallowtails although I imagine we will ! It’s year seven with this forest garden, and I’m honestly blown away by it this year we are flushed with beach plums right now seaberries are coming in , a lost shissandra has resurfaced , our hardy kiwis will prolly start fruiting next year…. the cranberries have spread…. This year I got Szechuan peppercorn plants in the ground…. It’s all so cool … I haven’t watered it or weeded it in years! Trying hard to wrap up some upgrades to the greenhouse before winter, but if we don’t get to it, we don’t get to it
For me “local” is not a class signifier of wealth, it’s a commitment to living in a more holistic way, and we are here for it, and also here to expand the definition of what it means…
Check back in with us in five years, let’s see how our hazelnut and Chestnut Orchards are doing! And how many of these obscure ingredients we grow we will scale up and start incorporating more fully!!! It’s exciting .
