Every American Quarter Horse alive today traces back to one horse. His name was Wimpy. And his number was P-1.
Born in 1935 on the legendary King Ranch in Kingsville, Texas, Wimpy was a stocky chestnut stallion bred from the King Ranch's foundation sire the Old Sorrel — a bloodline that the Kleberg family had spent decades carefully building on the vast South Texas coastal plains. From the very beginning Wimpy carried something special in his blood and wore it plainly in every inch of his conformation.
In 1940 a group of ranchers gathered with one mission — to formally organize the American Quarter Horse breed and give it the recognition it deserved. They formed the American Quarter Horse Association and made a bold decision. The grand champion stallion at the 1941 Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show in Fort Worth, Texas would earn the most prestigious honor in the breed's new history — registration number one. AQHA P-1. The very first number in the studbook.
On that day in Fort Worth, Wimpy walked into the show ring and walked out as the most important horse in American Quarter Horse history. AQHA P-1. Forever. A number that can never belong to another horse as long as the breed exists.
He returned to the King Ranch after his historic win and spent his years doing what great stallions do — passing his gifts forward. He sired 174 registered offspring. His sons and daughters spread across ranches from Texas to California carrying his blood and his quality into the next generation and beyond.
In his final years King Ranch gifted Wimpy to George Clegg as a tribute to his contributions to the program. He lived out his days peacefully — dying knee deep in clover at age 22.
In 1989 he was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame. A bronze statue of Wimpy stands outside AQHA Headquarters in Amarillo, Texas — watching over a breed that began with him.
Over five million American Quarter Horses are registered today. Every single one of them shares a registry with the horse who wore the very first number

Thank you AQHYA for your support!

This past Saturday, June 13th, we held our 5th annual Readers Ride fundraiser at Sable Oak Equestrian Center in Brunswick. Thank you so much to Sherrye and John Trafton, the owners of Sable Oak, and their exceptional volunteers, who offer their space, time and expertise each year to allow children in our Read Together program to ride, groom and feed horses, then pick out horse-related books to take home. This event was also made possible by the generous sponsorships of local businesses and individuals – your support helped 15 children, their families and tutors spend the morning with these amazing animals!

𝗟𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻!

Ever notice that some horses seem to attract every fly in the barn while others are left alone? Proper electrolyte balance may play a bigger role than many horse owners realize.

Equiwinner Patches users have reported improvements not only in performance and hydration, but also fewer flies bothering their horses. From barrel racers to trainers, more horse owners are discovering another reason to add Equiwinner patches to their routine.
